Estates General Meeting
The Meeting was called due to the disagreements of the third estate. It was the first meeting called in 175 years. The third estate (which represented 97% of the population) was locked out of the meeting. -
National Assembly Formed
The National Assembly was a group formed by the third estate because after being locked out of a discussion about the issues they were angry about it, they wanted their 97% to be considered and accounted for. They are the true representatives of the country. -
Tennis Court Oath declared
After being locked out of the meeting, the representatives of the third estate went onto the tennis court nearby and declared an oath that they will not stop until the constitution is changed. -
Storming of the Bastille
The third estate prepared to overthrow the government. They stormed and raided the Bastille which was a symbol of the tyranny in France. They stole the gunpowder, killed people in their way, and demolished the Bastille. -
Declaration of the Rights of Man Written
On this day the National Assembly had gained complete control and wrote this declaration insuring themselves and all people rights to freedom, equality and justice. This marked the end of the monarchy in France -
Legislative Assembly makes laws in France
The reformed government made up of conservatives, moderates, and radicals is in charge and making revolutionary laws. -
Execution of King Louis XVI
King Louis is finally executed for all his mistreatment of the third estate, as well as for attempting to abandon the country. -
Committee of Public Safety governs France
A group of 12 people assigned to lead the revolution led by Robespierre. -
The Reign of Terror
A period of time in which the Committee of Public Safety (led by Robespierre) went around killing anyone who seemed opposed to the revolution. The constitution was even suspended. -
Dechristianization
A period of time when Robespierre tried to dechristianize people because he thought the catholic church had too much power, and would end the revolution. -
Execution of Maximilien Robespierre
After all the blood caused by Robespierre, he is finally executed due to treason. This marks the end of the reign of terror. -

After the revolution ends this government of 5 leaders led, who were against violence. -
Napoleon takes over in a coup d'etat
Napoleon was a very successful and powerful military leader, so when The Directory lost control, he surrounded them with troops and took power. -
Napoleon Signs Concordat with Catholic Church
Many peasants were upset at the restricting of church in the revolution. Napoleon signs this Concordat stating the relationship between church and state. -
Napoleon Created the Napoleonic Code
This was the code of laws during his rules. It eliminated many injustices but actually favored authority over individual rights. -
Napoleon crowns himself emperor of France
Because Napoleon had granted a lot of the revolutionary wishes, the people of France supported him in crowning himself emperor. -
Napoleon dies after he is banished to island of St. Helena
After many years of rule and battle, Napoleon lost a battle with Russia and was exiled to St. Helena where he died.
