The estates general convene at Versailles
Jacques Necker told Louis XIV to call the Estates General because they were having finical problems. This was made up of the First Estate-clergy, Second Estate-nobility,and the Third Estate, everyone else. When it was time, the Third was granted more representation but the Parliament of Paris stopped and invoked the rule that everyone only gets one vote. So the 1st and 2nd Estate got the winning vote. The third estate was mad that they had so little power so they protested. -
Oath of the Tennis Court is sworn
This was a act of protest by the Third Estate during the meeting of the Estates general. The 3rd Estate realized that if they were to try any reform anything they would be outvoted the other two estates, they formed a National Assembly. When they found out that they were locked out of the meeting hall and they believed that the king was going to disband them they moved into the indoor tennis court. Inside they took a oath to not separate until they had written a constitution for France. -
Storming the Bastille occurs
The Third Estate,wanted to arm themselves, against the king.
Revolutionaries approached the Bastille and demanded that the military leader, Governor de Launay to hand over the prison and the gunpowder, but he refused. The crowd became angry and were able to get inside the courtyard. While inside they tried to break into the main fortress. The soldiers became scared and started to fire. When the fighting, some soldiers joined the crowd. The leader saw there was no hope, so they surrendered. -
National Assembly issues Declaration of the Rights of Man
Once they agreed that a Declaration of Rights was needed they had trouble putting it together. The assembly accepted a proposal made by Jean-Jospeh Mounier to add the declaration of human rights to the constitution. There was a committee that was elected to examine and put together the ideas for the constitution. This new version of government had put protection of natural rights instead of the King as the authority. It also had many reforms that was liked by Enlightenment writers. -
The Great Fear ravages the countrysides
It was a time were there was a lot of peasants riots/uprising that was caused by political unrest, rumor, and panic. Panic was caused by a food crisis, the political developments that were happening in Versailles and the fear that peasants had of outsiders. Peasants started to hear rumors that the king had hired gangs of n to destroy their crops/property to show political control. To protect themselves they armed up to defend themselves also long marches attacking nobles and being destructive. -
Women march on Versailles and force the royal family to return to Paris
The economy was poor there wasn't a lot of bread/it was costly, it was the main source of food. Women were mad at the portion/cost. A large group of women begin to revolt/started to march through Paris asking for fair priced foods/people joined in. Took over Hotel de Versailles were they got bread/weapons and continued on to Versailles. There the king agreed to give them food. They told the king to come back to Paris and he agreed, but they blamed the Queen for their problems, she had lavish $. -
Royal Family is arrested while attempting to flee France
Louis XIV and his family had tried to flee because of there personal religious beliefs, lack of faith in the constitution/revolution. Louis XIV got advice from Mirabeau about how if the monarchy fell the king would be left powerless. The escape plan was made by Alex von Fersen, Marie Antoinette favorite. He planned to sneak them out to Montmedy, in northern eastern France. There were various delays in the escape plan, that put them behind by hours. were caught at Varennes, by a local craftsmen. -
France declares war on Austria
Austria and Prussia called a meeting with all European leaders to talk about reestablishing King Louis XIV as the ruler of France, this lead to war. In France everyone wanted war, war was wanted for two different reason. One was the monarchy that thought with the new government it was easily lose. The revolutionaries thought they would unite with war and spread ideas. The legislative Assembly declared war, and the french had bad and start but got better and were able to win. -
Bitter struggle occurs in the National Convention between Girondists and the Mountain
The Girondins and Montagnards were two groups that meant at the Nation Convention. The Girodins was lead by Jacques Brissot, they supported the idea of a revolution war /spread worldwide. The Montagnards were influenced by the people in Paris like the working class, and they were lead by Robespierre. The Girondins and Montagnards were always arguing over policy,and by the spring it had turned into a war.The Montagrds were under pressure of the National Guard to get ride of the Girondins. -
Louis XIV is executed
Louis XIV was executed after getting caught trying to flee France and arrested and imprisoned. The following January Louis XIV had been convicted and sentenced to death by guillotine. He caused his own death because he had financial problems that caused the meeting of Estates General, that helped the Third Estate realizing they had no power and the revolution to occur. Since he did not agree with the ideas of revolution he was bound to end up for not being on their side. -
Reign of Terror darkens Paris and the provinces
The Montagnard deputies in the National Convention said that they needed a counter-revolutionary terror and the Committee of Public Safety agreed with this, who was lead by Robespierre. also new laws to make an official government. error was needed because the government was in panic, was being attacked,they were in a civil war. People that were suspected to be doing things of counter-revolution were given tribunal trials without due process of law, sent to prison, or to the guillotine to die. -

He was in Estates General, then he moved on into being in a group called Jacobin's were he found people that were like him and he wanted the people to overthrow the government. He started to gain power and moved up levels in the Assemble. After he became the leader of the Committee of Public Safety and was the most powerful man in France. Then he made the Reign of Terror to protect the country against others. When the revolutionary leaders had enough of him they arrested him and executed him. -
Directory rules
It was the new government of France, based on the new constitution. When the Directory was in power it had to deal with many problems like famine, civil war, corruption, and lastly wars with other countries. There was also a struggle for power between two groups. As they progressed the people became unhappy because the use of military force to stop uprising/ weren't fair with elections. They did help France bit with moving on from the Terror. Military power was high and it overthrew Directory. -
Napoleon overthrows the Directory and seizes power
The only reason that Napoleon was able this is because the Directory was corruption and the military leader Napoleon Bonarparte was able to overthrow the failing french Directory. He had arrived from battle he had just won in Egypt and with the help of his brother, Sieyes, and Roger-Ducos he was able to end the Directory. At this time the Directory didn't have the support needed within the country and Napoleon didn't like the Directory. So he was able to replace the government and it was over,
