Meeting of the Estates General
The 3 Estates meet to discuss the cahiers of grievances. The poor 3rd estate doesn't get much of a say... so they make their own, National Assembly and have the Tennis Court Oath, promising to keep meeting until a Constitution is made -
Storming of the Bastille
A mob of peasants storm the Bastille out of FEAR since Louis XVI sent the Swiss Guard to to close off teh city and keep it under control. They must defend themselves! They go to Invalides and get weapons and then to the Bastille to get gunpowder -
The Great Fear
Among the peasants, a fear arises of being attacked by the King for what they have done. They begin to attack nobles and clergy who leave and become émigrés. The king isn't helping at all. -

Similar to the Declaration of Independence, they step towards what they want to accomplish by making everyone equal -
Women of Paris force Louis XVI and family to leave Versailles and come to Paris
Women walk to Versailles b/c there is a high price on food and so the women cannot provie food for families. Critical role in the Revolution. They want the royal family to see what is going on in France and do something about it -
Pillnitz Declaration
Issued by Austria and Prussia. States that if you do anything to the royal family, we will take over you. -
Constitution of 1791 and Legislative Assembly Made
Limited monarchy and 83 Departments to divide up France. Church under state control -
Legislative Assembly faces economic troubles
- Inflation--> money looses its value and prices fo up because of the financial crisis. Can't afford food
- Factions--> rival/political parties arrive in Legislative Assemby
Sans-Culottes= Proletariat
Jacobins= made up of Bourgeoisie
they are allies. (Jacobins= more power)

France in war from this point to the end of the Revolution, This establishes a nationalism idea -
King attempts to flee France
King is humiliated from going from absolute monarch to almost no power. Thinks that if he gets out of Grance, other countries might help him gain back his absolute monarchy. Seen as a traitor -
Legislative Assembly replaced by National Convention
France doesn't do well in the war against Austria. So, the Legislative Assembly is wiped away and the National Convention is formed -

to protect people from foreign wars/invaders and from counterrevolutionaries. Guillotine comes to action -
National Convention (2nd Constitution)
1st Act: Abolish the monarchy
2nd Act: Decree of Fraternity--> overthrow their government
Goal: spread Revolution ideas to Europe -
