Meeting of the Estates General
The Estates general met in Versailles to solve the problems in France's collasping economy. There were more problems with the government and social system of France. The Third Estate withdrew from the Estates general. -
Creation of the National Assembly
The National Assembly was formed by members of the Third Estate. The National Assembly would not break up until a constitution was drafted (Tennis Court Oath). This began the French Revolution. -
Storming the Bastille
The Bastille was a sign of great oppression to the National Assembly. A mob of Parisians marched to the Bastilles demanding weapons. Though this was a great victory in the French Revolution, many people were afraid that King Louie XVI would punish them (The Great Fear). -
Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen
The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen adopted the principles of "liberty, equality, and fraternity". Under this declaration, all men are equal under the law. However, these rights did not extend to women. -
Creation of the National Convention
The National Convention was created to protect France from ongoing mob violence and foreign invasion. It abolished monarchy and declared France a republic. It is made up of three political factions: the Mountain, the Girondins, and the Plain. -

King Louie XVI was condemned and on this day executed. Other European nations were horrified with the news. -

The purpose of the Reign of Terror was to protect France from all enemies of the Revolution. Many citizens were accused of being enemies and were executed. About 16,000 people were guillotined. -

Napoleon Bonaparte sent his army to overthrow the French government. The Napoleon Era begins.
