Estates-General Meeting
Louis refused to deal with the lack of funds the French government had. The second estate then forced him to call a meeting which was held at Versailles. Louis's solution was to tax the nobility. This event is important because it calls to attention the seriousness the country was in. -
National Assembly
The Third Estates representatives wished to hold more power. Thus, they created and called themselves the National Assembly. They wished to proclaim an end to absolute monarchy and form a representative government. This event it important because when the National Assembly voted, it was one of the first deliberate acts of the revolution. -
Tennis Court Oath
The delegates from the Third Estate found that they were locked out of their meeting space on this day. They then broke down a door and used the indoor tennis court. They pledged to stay in the tennis court until they wrote a new constitution. This is important because it pushes the revolution forward. -
Women's March on Versailles
Parisian Women began to riot over the prcie of bread. They carried many weapons and marched on Versailles. The women broke into the palace and even killed a few gaurds. They insisted Louis and his queen, Marie Antoinette return to Paris. This even if signigicant because the kind and queen did return to Paris, and never saw their palace in Versailles again. -
Louis's Escape
Recognizing that he and his family were danger, Louis planned an escape to Austria. When they got to the border however, they were caught. The family was then returned to Paris where their fate was sealed. This event is important because Louis's attempted escape solidified the influence of his enemies in the government. -
France at War
Neighboring countries like Prussia and Austria supported Louis's return to power. They wanted absolute monarchy to rule again. The Legislative Assembly however responded by declaring war. This marked an important moment of the French Revolution because it was the start of "real war" -
End of the Reign of Terror
The Reign of Terror claimed the lives of thousands, and the National Convention began to fear their own lives. They turned on Robespierre and arrested him. He was then exectued. This signifies the radical phase of the French Revolution and the end of it. -
Napoleon Comes to Power
Napoleon is seen as the "hero of the hour" in 1796 he was appointed to lead a French Army. He swept through Italy and made many remarkable victories. This is important because it shows the growing power Napoleon held. -
France at Peace
Britain, Austria, and Russia wished to drive Napoleon from power. He led his armies forward however, and because of all the war the three countries eventually signed a peace agreement with France. This event/year siginified that France was at peace for the first time in 10 years. Them, Napoleon focused on restoring France. -
End of the French Revolution
The French Revolution seemingly ended around 1815. This was when the House of Bourbons was restored under a constituional monarchy, The French Revolution made a remarkable impact on Europe as a whole and especially France, It showed rises and falls of many different leaders.
