    King Louis XVI and Antoinette attempted to flee to Austria to initiate a counter-revolution. However, they were stopped and recognized so they returned to Paris and the king's powers were reduced to a simple figurehead. However, many radicals were unhappy that there was still a king so they protested but the revolutionary guard fired apon them. This split the revolutionist into two groups, the radicals, and the moderates.

    Fearing that other countries would attack France they declared war on Austria. Prussia also joined against France and sent them a threat saying "if the king was killed they would burn Paris to the ground", this, however, only angered the people. causing them to raid the king's palace and he took refuge in the legislative assembly where they demoted his position as king entierly.

    During the September massacres, many prisons were raided due to fear of them rebelling. over 1,600 people were tried and executed on the spot including women and children.

    The National Convention declared the French Republic. Lots of ideas of democractic and equality were being implemented, the new republic was also erasing as many signs of monarchy as possible. The cult a reason was created to replace the church and many religious treasures were destroyed.

    Robespierre and many radicals wanted the ex king to be dead because they believed it was the only way for the revolution to survive and to prevent him from being put back on the throne. The former King was found guilty for treason after being put on trial. However, the moderates only wanted to deport the king so they voted and the radicals won by one vote. so the king was killed by guillotine and Marie Antoinette would suffer the same fate soon after.

    Many other countries had joined the war effort against France. This made the legislative assembly to make a new conscription law that forced all religions to have a certain quota of men to fight the war. however, some of these regions were still very conservative and against the revolution. This caused many regions to start counterrevolutions.

    With everything going badly in France Jean Marat blamed the moderates and called for them to be executed. this leads the conservatives to call for the arrest of Marat. it ended with all moderates in the government being arrested which left the radicals in full power. Meanwhile, in Caen, a woman of the same Charollote Corday was extremely angered by the violence of the revolution and the radicalization. Charlotte wanted to bring peace to France so she went to Paris and murdered Marat.

    Robespierre created the committee of public safety to protect France from its enemies which were like a 12-member dictatorship. The revolutionary Tribunal was also created to streamline trying suspected enemies of the revolution. on September 1793 Robespierre announced that "Terror is the Order of the Day". Many spies and secret policemen were everywhere listening to everything. anyone who was suspected to be against the revolution was tried. as a result many people were sent to the guillotine.

    A more moderate group called the Thermidorians replaced the radicals. They wanted to restore peace and stability to France and people now turned against the radicals. They created a new constitution that also prevented power from falling into one person's hands.
  • Royalists and Napoleon

    Royalists and Napoleon
    Royalists saw this as an opportunity to protest for an insurrection but they were quickly put down by Napolean and were promoted to general. Napoleon then defeated Italy and forced Austria to sign a peace treaty.
