Louis xvi calls the estates-general
The king, Louis XVI, was being spoke against by the people, and his three estate ministers came with reports on the people’s complaints. the king agrees to make things better, but royal guards were starting to surround the area. -
Divided French society
French society was outdated. they made three new class Clergy,Nobility, and the rest of the pop. clergy were the priests and minesters, nobility was the rich land owners and the rest were everyday towns people. and in this time period then french spent more money than they had. -
Parisians storm the Bastille
The french heard that the king was sending the royal troops to the city. they wanted to fight back, they had muskets but no gun powder. 800 protested went to storm the bastille to get gunpowder. A riot broke and they stormed the bastille. many were killed. -
Revolt/national assembly
the revolt had the worst famine in french history. There were starving peasants and rumors of attacks on town. peasants unleashed fury on the nobles who were re imposing their dues. Paris commune comes to power and Paris goes to turmoil. Special privileges end and feudalism abolished. the declaration of the rights of man similar to the declaration of independence. 6000 woman march on Versaille with their anger focused on the queen. churches then went under state control. -
Threats from Abroad
When word of the king’s failure to escape spread throughout the country, hostility continued to grow. In August of 1791, the king of Prussia and the emperor of Austria created the Declaration of Pilintz, a document that allowed them to intervene if nessesary. -
Civil war (radicals take over)
Emigres began writing reports of the peoples complaints. By doing so, they would overthrow the government and take over. -
Monarchy
Monarchys abolishment creates tension whcih lead to vilence. in aug 10 1792 a crowd of parisions stormed robol palce. radicals take control and execute the king. a new republic starts -
Robespierre and the reign of terror
Robespierre became leader of the Comittie of Public Safety, and dedicated himself to the. revolution. He embraced Rousseau’s beliefs, and said that “liberty cannot be secured, unless criminals lose their heads.” -
Spread of Nationalism
the war gave the french a strong sense of nationality. they started to celebrate and attend festivals that supported the revolution and their own nation. -
Third stage of the Revolution
The third stage of the reveloution starts. 3 constitions were made since 1789. the directory held power from 1795 to 1799. it made peace with spain and prussia. war contiuned with great britten and austria. the directory turnd to napolian for help
