Douglass tries to escape from Freeland, by stealing a canoe from Hamilton. Someone betrays them and they are found out and put in jail. -

After his failed escape attempt, Captain Auld sent him back to his brother Hugh. -
Auld hires Douglass to calk at shipyards.
The first shipyard Douglass ends up being beaten up and Auld sends him to a second one where he begins to make his own contracts. -
