- In 1818- Federick Douglass was born with the name Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey and he was not sure of his date of birth. He only knew the year. Born in Tuckahoe, Talbot County, Maryland. His Childhood
He was raised by grandmother Betsey Bailey at Holme Hill Farm, where he was born; only saw his mother a few times because they were separated at birth. -
He Moved
He moved to a plantation on Wye River, where he lived with his siblings Perry, Sarah, and Eliza. -
He gets sent to Baltimore then returns back home to Maryland and then sent back to Baltimore
His mother dies. He is sent to Baltimore to live with Hugh Auld and his wife Sophia. His master, Aaron Anthony, dies later that year; Frederick becomes the property of Thomas Auld, Anthony's son-in-law. Thomas Auld sends him back to Baltimore. -
He got a job and started learning to read
Worked in a shipyard as general assistant, he practiced reading and writing in secret. -
He gets sent back to Maryland
Frederick Douglass was sent to St. Michaels, Maryland, where he works for Thomas Auld. He tried to teach other slaves how to read until Auld found out and stopped him. -
Secretly starts a Sunday school and teaches other slaves to read
Federick Douglass is hired out to work for William Freeland, a Talbot County, Maryland, farmer. Secretly organized Sunday school and taught other slaves to read. -
Failed attempt to escape
he made an escape plan but he was discovered, then put in jail, and then released. He returns to worked for Hugh and Sophia Auld in Baltimore and was hired out to work as a caulker in a Baltimore shipyard. The knowledge he gained there helps him escape slavery two years later. -
Finally free
He borrowed papers from a free black sailor, he escaped from slavery to New York and changes his last name to Johnson. -
Federick Douglas and Anna Murray get married
The ceremony was performed by minister James W. C. Pennington, who was also a slave in Maryland that had escaped. -
Federick Douglas had children
Federick Douglass had 5 children. His 1st was child was names Rosetta and she was born in 1839 and died in 1906.
His 2nd child was named Lewis Henry, he was born in 1840 and died in 1908.
His 3rd child was named Fredrick Douglass, Jr., he was born in 1842 and died in 1892.
His 4th child was named Charles Redmond, he was born in 1844 and died in 1920.
His 5th child was named Annie Douglass, she was born in 1849 and died in 1859. -
