Alliences formed and were rapidly built. Archduke Franz Ferdinad of Austria-Hungary was murdered by a Serb. Austria-Hungary and Serbia were now at war.

The year of 1917 marked when a revolution forced Nicholas II to give up the throne. Leader of the rebels, Vladimir Lenin, took control of the government. In 1922, Lenin renamed the Russian Empire the USSR, or the Soviet Union.

    Joseph Stalin took over as didcator after Lenin. He ruled ruthlessly from 1924 to 1953 and is responsible for the deaths of an estimated 10 million people.

    The Treaty of Versailles signaled the end of WWI and was signed at Versailles. The Central Powers lost, and were forced to pay money to rebuild France, Russia, and Great Britain. They also were not allowed many weapons in case they would regain too much power.

The U.S. was richer than any other country had ever been. Many Americans used their wealth to buy cars, electric appliances, and radios. Art, such as jazz music, was rapidly booming.

    In 1929 the Stock Market crashed putting America into ruin. Thousands of banks closed as well as thousands of companies.
    People couldn't afford to have houses so they set up Hoovervilles. These consisted of shacks made of scraps and garbage, and are called Hoovervilles because people blamed Herbert Hoover for the Great Depression.

America's economy was so weak, about 1/4 of America couldn't find work. This sent Americans to go desparately looking for a job around the country. Many went very hungry.

    The Korean war began when around 75,000 soldiers from the Communist North Korea poured over the 38th parallel dividing them from the Republic of South Korea. American soldiers came in for South Korea and the fighting was stalled for a time. Eventually the Korean War ended and the country is still divided today.

During the '60's, the U.S. sent troops to help out South Vietnam and to fight communism. Thousands of U.S. soldiers died as did millions of Vietnamese. 1975 marked when North Vietnam defeated South Vietnam. They are now communist.
  • End of Cold War

    End of Cold War
    The Cold War began to end when the Berlin Wall fell in 1989 freeing much of Eastern Europe. It officially came to and end when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 and the Soviet Union became Russia and a capitalist country.
