Beatles Break Up
The Beatles, a well-known band, began in 1960 and broke up in 1970. Events that caused them to break up included the death of their manager and when they stopped touring in 1966. Each of the four band members started going separate ways and creating their own solo pieces. Ringo’s Rotogravure was the last album Lennon, McCartney, Harrison, and Starr made together.

First Earth Day
The first Earth Day was held on April 22, 1970 by Senator Gaylord Nelson who thought the issue of only having one earth needed to be brought up. About twenty-million Americans attended events and activities dealing with our earth and environmental issues. The event started other actions like the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and present day Earth Days.

18 Year Olds Given the Right to Vote
Before the legal voting age was 18, many countries had it at 21 or higher. But on June 22nd, 1970, President Richard Nixon signed off a law giving 18 year olds the right to vote. It was then added to the Constitution as the 26th Amendment with 18 being the new age to vote.

Cigarrete ads banned on TV
Tobacco was the most advertised product on TV in 1969. Cigarettes were addictive because of nicotine, and caused cancer. President Nixon then banned ads on TV of cigarettes on April 1st, 1970, and had companies that made cigarretes have warning labels to inform of the risks it caused towards health. At 11:50 pm on January 1, 1971 the last TV advertisement of a cigarette was aired.

London Bridge Brought to the US
When the London Bridge in England started to fall down Robert McCulloch bought it for $2,460,000. All the bricks and stones of the bridge were taken down and shipped to California then brought to the Arizona. Disney World Opens
In Florida on October 21st, 1971 Disneyworld had its grand opening. After being planned out for seven years, 10,000 people showed up to be the first to enter. Walt Disney built it because he wanted another theme park to go along with Disneyland. Walt Disney died before the park was opened so Roy O. Disney dedicated the park to him and named it “Walt Disney World.”

Mark Spitz Wins 7 Gold Medals
In 1972 at the summer Olympics held in Munich, Germany, Mark Spitz won seven gold medals for swimming. At 22 years old he made new records. Teammates of his used to not like him as he would brag that he would win, but then lost in the 1968 Olympics. As he started treating others better, he was liked more and this is said could have been what helped him win the Olympics in 1972.

Terrorist Attack at the Olympic Games in Munich
Members of the Black September, a terrorist group, attacked the Olympic Games at Munich, Germany on September 5, 1972. On this day, nine Israeli athletes were captured hostage and two were killed. The terrorist asked to be taken to Egypt with the hostages. German officials planned a rescue at the airport, but it didn’t work and the nine people held hostage were killed, eleven total died.

First Successful Video Game (Pong) Launched
Video games today were started because of the video game pong. In 1972 Nolan Bushnell invented the game; it was not the very first video game but one of the first popular games. It is very simple; like tennis on a screen, there is a ball going from one side to the other when a player hits it with their paddle with their controller.

Abortion Legalized in US
In 1973 there was Supreme Court case called Roe vs. Wade. The case was about abortion being illegal; Jane Roe was a women fighting to make it legal and Wade was a Texan Attorney General who was fighting to keep it illegal. At the time, many women had to get abortions that were unsafe and illegal. Then on January 22, 1973 it was up to the women whether they wanted an abortion or not as it became legal.

US Pulls out of Vietnam
The USA withdrew from Vietnam on March 29, 1973 because of media disapproval and Americans no longer supporting the war. President Nixon called the plan to remove troops, Vietnamization. The Vietnam War occurred in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia which began in 1959 and ended in April 1975. North Vietnam was communist and was supported by communist allies. The USA supported South Vietnam trying to stop the spread of communism.

Sears Tower Built
In Chicago, Illinois the Sears Tower was built starting in 1970 and completed on May 3rd, 1973. It is 1, 454 feet tall, and was the tallest building at the time including 110 stories. Chicago needed the building for work space, so when it opened 12,000 workers had an office in there. The Sears Tower is also known as the Willis Tower.

National Speed Limit 55
On January 2, 1974 President Nixon signed the Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act. The National Maximum Speed Law in 1974 kept the speed limit from being higher than 55 mph. This decision was due to oil prices and the distribution of oil during 1973. Many people disagreed with the law so then the national speed limit was raised to 65 mph in some places, and then states were given the power to chose the speed limits.

US President Nixon Resigns
Richard Nixon was the president from 1969-1974. He was the 37th president, and the 1st to resign from office. During his term, he improved US’s relationship with China, the U.S.S.R, and ended fighting in Vietnam. But the Watergate Scandal caused his resignation. General R. Ford took over after Nixon stopped his presidency on August 8, 1974.

Girls allowed to play in Little League Softball
Before 1974 only boys were allowed to play Little League Baseball. A life changing decision was made when girls were allowed to join. In 1974 Little League Softball was created, with 30,000 girls signed up. This choice has affected many lives today; 360,000 girls playing softball today, which all goes back to the day when girls were first allowed to play on a team on December 26, 1974.

Microsoft Founded
On April 4, 1975 Bill Gates and Paul Allen created Microsoft. It was first created from BASIC interpretations for the Altair 8800. It dominated the computer operating system, following with programs such as Microsoft office. The Microsoft Company moved from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Bellevue, Washington on Jan. 1, 1979. Microsoft incorporated on June 25, 1981 and the stock went public on March 13, 1986.

General Ford Assassination Attempts
Within 17 days President Ford was almost assassinated twice. The first time was by Lynette Fromme who tried to shoot Ford on September 5, 1975. The second time he was almost killed by Sarah Jane Moore who aimed a gun at the president as walked out the Saint Francis Hotel on September 22, 1975. Both women opposed the political institution, and Ford was the representation of it.

Francisco Franco Dies
The ruler of Spain, Francisco Franco, died on November 20, 1975. During his lifetime he was a Spanish General, soldier, tyrant, and head of the Nationalist military rebellion. He died in Madrid, Spain because of the Parkinson's disease at the age of 82.

Betamax VCR's Released
The first Betamax, sl-7200, was brought to the US in 1976 by Sony from Japan. It was a video recorder that was sold at a reasonable price. The Betamax was able to record a TV show that wasn’t showing at that time, and could record one show while another was being watched on a different channel.

Apple Computer Launched
Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne founded Apple on April 1, 1976. It started when Wozniak was examining computers and realized that the parts were cheap, and he could buy them to build his own computer with his partners. Then in July at $666.66 the Apple I was first sold. Within 10 months about 200 Apple I computers were sold. Apple has now created products like the IPod touch, IPhone, computers, etc.

North and South Vietnam Form the Socialist Repulic of Vietnam
On July 2, 1976 North and South Vietnam merged to form the Socialist Republics of Vietnam. Before they formed together they were individually called North Vietnam and South Vietnam, North being communist and the South was democrat. The change happened when North Vietnam forces damaged the South forces. Then the North took over Saigon in the South and reunified the country.

George Lucas, creator of Star Wars, released the first movie on May 25, 1977. The movie now has books, video games, TV shows, and comic books based on the series. It was followed by two sequels and now has grossed about$ 4.49 billion. It was produced by 20th century fox and brought a phenomenom to movies.

New York City Blackout
For a whole day, from July 13, 1977 to July 14, 1977 New York City went through a black out. It was caused by a lightning strike that caused two circuit breakers to trip in Westchester County. The circuit breaker couldn’t reclose, so power wouldn’t start again. New York was going through a financial crisis and since there was no power, it was hot and there was no light, causing looting and vandalism to the city.

Elvis Presely's Death
In Memphis, Tennessee on August 16, 1977 Elvis Presley was found dead at his home. Ginger Allen, his girlfriend, found him dead in the bathroom upstairs. Once they arrived at the hospital he was defined “dead on arrival”. His medical doctor, George Nichopulos, stated Elvis Presley dead at 3:30 pm on that day at the age of 82. He was a well-known signer, referred to as “The King of Rock”.

Atlantic City Permits Gambling
Atlantic City in New Jersey was experiencing trouble attracting visitors due to crime and economic problems. Hotels became vacant, forcing many to close. In order to save the city New Jersey permitted gambling in casinos. The first casino was legally opened here on May 26, 1978. Over time more hotels were built, more people started visiting, and Atlantic City casinos were once more popular than Las Vegas ones.

Love Canal Declared A Federal Disaster
The Love Canal was a neighborhood in Niagara Falls, New York. Hooker Chemical had used the site to bury 21,000 tons of toxic waste.and then sold it to the school district. Housing construction and rainstorms caused the chemical waste to be released, which lead to a public health emergency and an urban planning scandal. The 1st health problem was raised in July 1978 and it was declared a federal disaster August 2, 1978.

Jonestown Massacre
Jonestown is another name for the Peoples Temple Agricultural Project, led by Jim Jones, in Guyana. On November 8, 1978 an event happened here, making it one of the largest killings. It started when US Congressmen went to Jonestown and was shot by the cult, along with four other people. Then 909 Temple people died in Jonestown due to cyanide poisoning as the town was destroyed. And four Temple members died in Georgetown, Guyana, a total of 918 deaths.

Sony Introduces the Walkman
The Walkman is a portable audio player created by Sony on July 1, 1979. It introduced a change in listening to music by allowing people to carry music with them and to be able to hear their music through lightweight headphones.
The 1st prototype was built in 1978 by Nobutoshi Kihara who was an audio engineer for Sony Corporation. Nobutoshi built the prototype for Akio Morita, so that he would be able to listen to operas during his plane trips.

ESPN starts broadcasting
ESPN, or Entertainment and Sports Programming Network, launched on September 7, 1979. The network includes pre-recorded and live events, sports talk shows, and other sports related shows. It was created by Bill and Scot Rasmussen; Bill had an interest in sports, so when he got fired from his job he met with Ed Egan who wanted to create a television show. They put their interests together and came up with ESPN.

Iran Takes American Hostages in Tehran
The Shah of Iran fgaveoil supply to America and in return Iran got economic and military help. The Shah lost support of the people by spending money on military weapons and not keeping a stable economy; which caused him to flee the country. He came to America for cancer treatment, which made the people of Iran go against Americans. On November 4, 1979 the crisis began when Iran militants took 70 Americans Hostage in Tehran for 444 days.
