After the Civil War, the southern states passed laws that segregated blacks and tried to keep them from exercising their rights. -

Black Codes were laws that were passed after the Civil War that tried to push Black Americans to work in labor and also restricted their freedom. -

The refusal to comply with certain laws, policies, or taxes as a peaceful form of political protest. -
