Americans saw it as an unwinnable cause and lacking objective. It saw the creation of the hippie movement as they joined political radicals in the support of civil rights and anti-Vietnam causes, rejecting traditional mainstream American life. The anti-Vietnam War movement would become so big that it would take priority over the Civil Rights legislation that previously dominated. This shows how big of an impact it had on American society politically and socially, creating brand new movements. -
Brown v. Board of Education Ruling
*Key Concept - A landmark Supreme Court case ruling that would effectively end racial segregation in public schools.This ruling would overturn Plessy v. Ferguson and the separate but equal doctrine. Vietnam War Begins

MLK Leads Montgomery Bus Boycott
*Key Concept - MLK founds the MIA which was an organization created to lead the Montgomery Bus Boycott. He would play a major part in the boycott of the bus system in Montgomery, Alabama as it would eventually lead to the segregation of public buses being ruled unconstitutional. Integration of University of Alabama
*Key Concept - JFK sends National Guard troops to the University of Alabama to pressure Alabama Governor George Wallace. George Wallace would eventually break under this pressure and end his blockade of the University of Alabama in order to allow Vivian Malone and James Hood, 2 African Americans, to enroll. March on Washington
*Key Concept - MLK would lead a massive protest march in front of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. It was organized to draw attention to challenges and inequalities faced by African Americans many years after emancipation and was also the site where MLK would deliver his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. JFK Assassination
During a campaign visit in Dallas Texas, JFK would be shot and killed in his limousine by Lee Harvey Oswald. This would lead to Lyndon B Johnson being sworn in as the 36th President of the U.S where he would initiate Kennedy's proposal of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and sign it into law. -
March on the Pentagon
*Key Concept - 100,000 radicals, liberals, hippies, war veterans, etc march on the Pentagon as a form of protest to the Vietnam War. It began as peaceful but violence erupted when the radical protesters clashed with the soldiers and U.S. Marshals who were there to protect the Pentagon. Hippie Movement
Originating on college campuses, it was a counterculture movement that emerged in the 60s, rejecting the normal ideal American life. Hippies promoted the recreational use of hallucinogenic drugs like marijuana and LSD, justifying it as a way to expand one's conscious and thinking. This would lead to the rise of drug use across the nation. -
U.S Moon Landing
American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin became the first humans to land on the moon and Armstrong being the first to ever walk on the moon. The U,S considered it a victory in the space race as they reached the moon before the Soviet Union could. -
Watergate Scandal
Several burglars were arrested in the office of the Democratic National Committee who were found to be connected to President Richard Nixon’s reelection campaign. They attempted to wiretap phones and steal documents in the office. Nixon would try to cover up the crime but would fail to do so, leading to his resignation in 1974. -
Ronald Reagan and Reaganomics
*Key Concept - President Ronald Reagan's conservative economic policy, Reaganomics, attacked the 1980 recession. It was aimed to reduce the growth of government spending, reduce the federal income tax, reduce government regulation of the economy, and tighten up the money supply to reduce inflation.
