  • The Korean War

    The Korean War
    The Korean war was the first proxy war of the cold war. The U.S backed South Korea and the USSR backed North Korea. This battle ended with the Korean Armistice treaty and was effectively a draw. This war set the precedent to how most of the conflicts in the cold war would go.

  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    This was a landmark United States Supreme Court case in which the Court declared state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students unconstitutional. This was a huge win for the Civil Rights movement and marked another step towards racial equality.

  • Montgomery Bus Boycott

    Montgomery Bus Boycott
    This boycott was started after Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama, to a white male passenger. Rev. Martin Luther King Jr organized this boycott in which African Americans stopped using public transportation for 381 days. This resulted in integration of all public transportation, and was a big step for the civil rights movement.

  • Little Rock 9

    Little Rock 9
    9 African American students enrolled in Little Rock High school. This made a lot of conflict because the school was previously all white. The 9 kids had to deal with racial slurs and crowds of whites on their way to school. President Kennedy had to send the national guard to Arkansas to make sure they got to school. This showed the major conflict that integrated schooling had, and presented the problem of properly enforcing it.

    Berlin Wall
    This was a barrier blocking off west Berlin from east Germany and was constructed by the German Democratic Republic. This was a plot made by the soviet union in an attempt to spread communism, and stop the capitalists in Berlin from plaguing the surrounding communists.

  • March On Washington

    March On Washington
    This was the largest political rally for human rights ever in the United States. An estimated 200,000 to 300,000 participants converged on the Mall in Washington, D.C., to protest for jobs and freedom for African Americans. MLK gave his iconic “I Have a Dream” speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. The March on Washington was a major event in the civil rights movement and helped pass the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

  • JFK Assassination

    JFK Assassination
    President Kennedy was shot by a former marine named Lee Harvey Oswald in Dallas, Texas. Kennedy was riding in a car and was rushed to parkland memorial hospital where he later died. His death cause vice president Lyndon B. Johnson to become the immediate president. His assassination caused a lot of widespread panic for the U.S because many had grown to depend on him.

  • Dewey Cannon III

    Dewey Cannon III
    Dewey Cannon was a protest conducted by the Vietnam Veterans against the war, VVAW. In one of their most famous protests, 1,000 veterans threw their combat ribbons, helmets, and uniforms on the Capitol steps, along with toy weapons. This was followed the next day with a massive demonstration and speeches in front of the capitol. This was an important even, because it is one of the most well known anti-war protests ever conducted in US history.

    U. S Ping-Pong Team Visits China
    This event is also known as ping-pong diplomacy, and it involved the US ping-pong team going to china to play there in the height of the cold war. This was a strategy used to thaw out cold war tensions during that time period. This eventually paved the way for President Nixon to visit Beijing and overall helped reduce cold war tensions. This was a very effective strategy that is still being used today.

    Watergate Scandal
    The Watergate scandal began early in the morning of June 17, 1972, when several burglars were arrested in the office of the Democratic National Committee. The burglars were connected to President Richard Nixon’s reelection campaign, and they had been caught wiretapping phones and stealing documents. Nixon took aggressive steps to cover up the crime afterwards, and in August 1974, after his role in the conspiracy was revealed, Nixon resigned. he was the first ever president to resign from office.

    End Of US Involvement in the Vietnam War
    On this day all US troops in Vietnam pulled out. It marked the end of the US's involvement in Vietnam and it also marked a huge loss for America. The main reason the US stopped fighting was because they lacked the patriotism. Many people in the US said that it wasn't there war, and that they needed to bring back their boys. Overall this resulted in a massive strain on the economy, and on the social ties which ended up being too much of a cost, so on April 30, 1975 all troops left Vietnam.

    Fall of the Berlin Wall
    The fall of the Berlin wall marked the end of the cold war, and ultimately the submission of the Soviet union. On November 9th, 1989 the GDR aka East Germany announced that citizens of the GDR could cross the border whenever they pleased. That night many citizens of East Germany piled up at the wall ready to travel freely into west Berlin. This was a huge moment as it marked the end of the long cold war.
