Governor George Wallace was very against desegregation of schools. John F Kennedy was one of the most beloved presidents in history. He was shot and killed in Dallas TX. When he was shot, America's heart broke. The AIDS crisis caused the death of many, especially gay men. There is still no cure. Back in the early 80s, no one knew what AIDS was. This lead to widespread stigmatization of those affected by aids. In the movie, Jenny had caught AIDS and died.
