    During the Cuban Missile Crisis, leaders of the U.S. and the Soviet Union engaged in a 13 day political and military stand off over the installation of nuclear-armed Soviet missiles on Cuba, just 90 miles from U.S. Disaster was avoided when the US agreed to the leader of the Soviet, Nikita Khrushchev’s offer to remove the Cuban missiles in exchange for the U.S. promising not to invade Cuba.

The dictator of Iraq, Saddam Hussein, had sent his military into a major oil exportor. If they went through and won this war Saddam Hussein would be in control of at lest 1/5 of the worlds oil supply. In the last few months of 1990, the United States participated in the defense of Saudi Arabia in a deployment known as Operation Desert Shield
