The evolution of computers from the beginning as early as 2700b.c. to 1958. I chose these periods of time because they stood out as being some of the most significant events. -
Programmable Loom
Joseph Marie Jacquard invents the first mechanical device that uses wooden punch cards to set loom patterns. -
First Printing Calculator
Swedish inventor Per Georg Scheutz created a printing calculator.
This is significant because it was able to read from a table, calculate the differences, and then print the results. That is almost enough to describe the worlds first computer. -
Punch Card Machine
Herman Hollerith invented a punch card machine that used cards with holes in them to give the machine instruction. This was another significant evolution because he added another process through input via key punch. His invention saved the U.S. Government millions of dollars in labor costs and time. -
Electronic Numerical Integrator
Two professors, John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert invented the first fully automated general purpose Electronic Numerical Integrator and Calculator (ENIAC). -
The First Computer Chip
Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce invented the first integrated circuit board known as the computer chip.
