At the height of the Cold War, on 1 January 1959. A guerrilla army led by Fidel Castro defeated the US-backed Batista government. He greeted cheering towns everywhere. Cubans loved him and this is where a lot of his popularity came from. In 1959 he became the prime Minister of Cuba. -

In April the U.S. government failed to take him out of power in what is known as the Bay of Pigs Invasion. By April 20th Castro forced a surrender by the invaders. -

In 1962 Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev convinced Castro to allow the U.S.S.R. to place R-12 MRBM nuclear missiles on Cuba. He claimed it was for the defense of Cuba, the U.S saw it as an offensive action. When Khruschev agreed to remove them Fidel felt betrayed. -
