Fetal Development Timeline

  • Week 1

    Week 1
    Week one is the last menstrual period that you will have during your pregnacy. Now that the egg is fertilized there is a 266 day journey ahead of development.

    Week 2
    The baby starts as a cell made from a fertilized egg. the sperm that fertilized the egg contains either an X or Y chromosome. The gender and charecteristics of the baby depend on this chromosome.

    The little cell that is slowly developing has its basic DNA information. Now cells start deviding. Two cells become four. The four cells become eight and so on.

    The little egg is now a bundle of 50 to 60 cells.

    The placenta is developing.
    You may experiance some spotting.
    This is when most wonam find out that they are pregnate because pregnacy stops periods, and missing a period is the first indicator of pregnacy. Once a period is missed no periods will occur for the rest of the pregnacy.

    The embro is about 1/4th of an inch long.
    Headaches may offten occur due to hormone levels rising.
    The heartbeat has begun.

    Now with a heartbeat, little legs and arms begin to develop. At around 1/2 an inch long the embros eyes are ears are starting to develop.

    This little embro is now capable of testing out its little growing arms and legs. wiggling around at the size of 3/4th of an inch. The mouth and tongue are able to be seen, and the baby has a blood type.

    bones begin to form.
    Fun Fact: babys head seems increasingly larger than the rest of the body because the brain is growing so fast it is out-developing the rest of the body

    Now a fetus, the fetus is around a size comparable to a small strawberry.
    fingerprints, nipples, nose, ears, and hair follicles are now all prominent.

    The baby is about 1.5 inches long.
    Eyelids are developed but will remain shut.

    The baby has reached 6 inches, half a footlong. Hair begins to grow and show more promently and is softly pigmented.

    At a whole 6.5 inches, a heartbeat is visible in an ultrasound. IF the baby is female the eggs she will have for life will be developing in her, she has aproxametly 600 at this 19 week mark.

    HALF WAY THERE. Only 20 more weeks left of development for the fetus. Skin is thicker and a heartbeat can be heard !

    The placenta is providing almost all nureshment. For a female fetus the eggs & vagina are developed. For a male fetus the testes start to lower from the abdomen during this stage of the pregacy.

    The baby can have reactions to loud sounds.The fetus is 11 inches long and little taste buds are forming on the tongue. Finger nails have developed and cover the base of the fingers.
  • Week 23

    Week 23
    The fetus can move around often and eyebrows have formed. Skin is in the prosses of being pigmented. There is a low 20% chance of survival for the baby if born at this stage.
  • Week 24

    Week 24
    There is a 36% survival rate if the baby is born during the week. Lungs have begun to evelop and the baby practices breathing. Now that taste buds have developed the baby can taste a drink that the mother takes a drink of.
  • Week 25

    Week 25
    Hands are now completly developed. If you are having twins they are begining to bond with one another. Babys explore their newly developed senses and limbs.
  • Week 26

    Week 26
    The second trimester has offically ended. Onto the third and final. Playing and touching with the baby can happen at this time. Mothers will feel much discomfort due to back pain and pressure on lower back.
  • Week 27

    Week 27
    The Eyes can open now. The brian is still rapidly growing. retina is starting to develop, if you shine a flashlight to one side of your belly, the baby may move to the light.
  • Week 28

    Week 28
    The baby has developed a sleeping pattern, and milk teeth are developed under the gums.Durning this week your belly will grow about half an inch to each week. If you are following a well structured meal plan then you have gained 24 at about most.
  • Week 29

    The baby is at about 2 and a half pounds. The head is growing biger so that it can house the brain properly. The babys head is probably still facing up. Can now distinguish vocies. You can play them music.
  • Week 30

    Now that you have gailed weight, its the babys turn. At up to three pounds the baby is 16 inches long. Hair, eyelashes, and eyebrows are growing more and more.
  • Week 31

    Loud noises can make the baby jump. Exercise is important swimming stretching and walking are many activites that you can do.
  • Week 32

    Week 32
    At a full17 inches & 4 pounds. The space within the uterus becomes more cramped. Boys testicles move from the kidney down to the groin then are going to their spot in the scrotum.
  • Week 33

    Week 33
    The baby inhals amniotic fluid to help its lungs practice and prepair for breathing. The little fuzz has been replaced by actual hair. Now that the nails are longer the baby can scratch its face so nails must be cut after birth.
  • Week 34

    Head down position may have already happened. Birth at this time would have good survival rates, but the baby would need hospital care. Babys born early can have many complecations due to not finishing development before they leave the womb.
  • Week 35

    Week 35
    Fat that is stored in the arms in leggs is what helps them regulate their body tempature. The lungs are almost developed completly.
  • Week 36

    Week 36
    The fetus may drop to the birthing canal at this time. The baby can reconize your voice, so talking to them is good.. The baby is 19 inches .
  • Week 37

    You are now at term. if you go into labor, the doctor most likly wont try to stop it.
  • Week 38

    Week 38
    Now the devlopment is complete. The baby will now just coontinue to gain weight. close to 7.5 pounds and 20 inches
  • Week 39

    Week 39
    Most babys are born with blue eyes and the color they will have for the rest of their life doesnt show for another few weeks or month..
  • Week 40
