Fetal Development Timeline

  • Month 1

    Month 1
    During the first month the baby's eyes are beginning to form with black circles and the lower jaw , throat , and the mouth are also begging to form . By the end of the first moth the baby is only about the size of a grain of rice .
  • Month 2

    Month 2
    During month 2 the baby's facial features are continuing to develop . Each ear is a little fold of skin on the side of its head , tiny buds buds that will eventually be arms and legs are forming as well . The neural tube is forming also. Bone starts to replace cartilage , and the baby is starting to move although the mother cannot feel it yet . By the end of the second month the baby is now a fetus and weighs about 9.45 grams and is about 1 inch long .
  • Month 3

    Month 3
    During month 3 , the baby becomes fully formed with arms legs hands , finger , feet and toes. It can open and close its fists and mouth . The toe nails and finger nails are beginning to form , the circulatory and urinary systems are working and the liver produces bile . By the end of the third month your baby is around 3 and half inches long and weighs about a ounce .
  • Month 4

    Month 4
    The nervous system is starting to function at this point . The reproductive organs and genitalia are now fully developed and you can go to a doctors office to get a ultrasound to see if you have a girl or boy . The baby's heart beat may also be audible with a Doppler . By the end of the forth month you baby weighs about 4 ounces and is about 6 inches long .
  • Month 5

    Month 5
    During month 5 , hair is beginning to grow on the baby's head , and lanugo , a soft fine hair , covers its back shoulders and temples , The hair protects the baby and its usually shed around a week after birth . The baby's skin is also covered in a "cheesy " like substance , its thought to protect the baby's skin from the amniotic acid . You may begin to feel the baby move since it is developing muscles . By the end of month 5 the baby weighs about a pound and is about 10 inches long .
  • Month 6

    Month 6
    By the of month 6 , your baby is about 12 inches long and weighs about 2 pounds. His or her skin is reddish in color, wrinkled, and veins are visible through the baby's translucent skin. Baby's finger and toe prints are visible. The eyelids begin to part and the eyes open.Your baby may respond to sounds by moving or increasing the pulse, and you may notice jerking motions if baby hiccups.If born prematurely, your baby may survive after the 23rd week of pregnancy with intensive care.
  • Month 7

    Month 7
    In month 7 the baby's hearing is fully developed and it changes position frequently and responds to stimuli , including sound , pain , and light . By now the baby is about 14 inches long and weighs around 3 pounds . If born prematurely, your baby would probably survive after the seventh month of pregnancy.
  • Month 8

    Month 8
    During the 8th month the baby will continue to mature and develop body fat reserves . the baby will be kicking more , the baby's brain is also developing rapidly by now and it can see and hear , Most internal organs are developed also but the lungs are still immature. By the end of the month the baby is about 18 inches long and weighs about 5 pounds .
  • Month 9

    Month 9
    During this month the baby's lungs become fully developed . The baby's reflexes are coordinated so it can blink , hold the eyes closed , turn the head , grasp firmly , and responds to sound , light , and touch . The baby's position changes for delivery , the baby drops down in the pelvis and usually its head is facing the birth canal . by the end of the pregnancy the baby is about 19 inches long and weighs about 7 pounds .
