Fetal Development Timeline

  • First Month

    In the first month the baby lungs and heart forms.
    The brain and nervous system forms.
    Arm, leg buds forms and eyes, ears, nose start to show, and the baby is about 1/4 inch.
  • Second Month

    Facial features forms
    The stomach, liver, and kidney developing
    The heart is now beating and the cartilage, skin, and muscles starts to shapes the body of the baby.
  • Third Month

    Arms, ears, hands, fingers, legs, feet, and toes have completely formed this month.
    The taste buds are forming and the baby vocal cords has also forming.
    The baby heart rate is 120-160 per beat and the baby is about 2 1/2 to 3 1/3 inches long.
  • Fourth Month

    The baby is now 7 inches and weighs 4 ounces and the heart beat can now be heard.
    Hair starts to grow and appear on the baby's head, kidney starts to make urin.
    Skin start to fill out with fat and eyebrows and eyelashes starts to grow.
  • Fifth Month

    The size of the baby is now about 8-12 inches and weighs about 1 to 1 1/2 pounds.
    The arms and legs starts to move and you will feel them move.
    Eyelids still are close, and the skin is now wrinkled and red.
  • Sixth Month

    The fingerprints start to form and eyes are almost developed eyelids can now open and close.
    The baby can now kick, cry, and hiccup.
    Now the baby is about 11-14 inches and weighs about 2 pounds
  • Seventh Month

    The baby is now 15 inches and weighs about 3 to 3 1/2 pounds and the brain and nervous system have completely grown.
    The lanugo covers the baby.
    He/She beings to look more like a newborn and the testicles starts to form for the boys.
  • Eighth Month

    The baby gains about 2 pound that month.
    It's eyes starts to open.
    It now weighs 5 1/2 pounds and is now 18 inches long.
  • Ninth Month

    The baby grows about 2 1/2 inches and gains 2 pounds that month.
    Weighs 6 to 7 1/2 pounds and is about 20 inches long.
    The baby settles its head down position.
