Fetal Development Month By Month

  • Month 1

    At two weeks the baby is the size of pin head. The egg then connects to the lining of the uterus. This stage is very critical for the spinal cord and the brain development. Internal organs and circulatory system then starts to form. The babies heart then begins to beat.
  • Month 2

    Face, eyes, ears, and limbs start to grow and take shape. The size of the baby is now about 1/4 inch long as the month starts. Bones of the baby begin to form.
  • Month 3

    At month three the size of the baby is now about 1 inch long. The buds of the teeth start to show up. Fingers and toes are almost fully formed. All organs are there but aren't fully developed. Nostrils, mouth, lips, and eyelids are forming.
  • Month 4

    Baby's size is now about 3 inches long and weighs about 1 ounce as the month is starting. It can suck its thumb, swallow, hiccup, and even move around inside the mom. Its facial features are showing more clearly.
  • Month 5

    At the months beginning the baby is now 6 1/2 -7 inches long and weighs up to 4 or 5 ounces. Baby's hair, eyelashes, and eyebrows are now visible. The teeth are continuing to develop. Organs are beginning to mature. The baby becomes even more active.
  • Month 6

    Baby's size is now 8 to 10 inches and weighs around 8-12 ounces when the month is just beginning. Fat moves under the skin and the baby (fetus) looks wrinkled. The feeling of breathing movements begin.
  • Month 7

    As the month begins the baby is now 10 to 12 inches long and weighs around 1 1/2 to 2 pounds. Has active times followed with quiet or restful times.
  • Month 8

    The size of the baby is now about 14-16 inches and weighs about 2 1/2 to 3 pounds. Gaining weight is continuing to come on fast. Can react to loud noises with a jerking action. The head moves to facing downwards.
  • Month 9

    The month is just beginning and baby is now about 17 to 18 inches long and weighs about 5 to 6 pounds. Baby continues to gain weight. Skin becomes nice and smooth as the fat is stored away. The fetus has less room to move around so baby doesn't move much. Gains disease-fighting antibodies from mother's blood. Ready for birth baby moves to the pelvis.
