Fetal Development

  • Month 1

    During the first month of the development of the embryo the amniotic sac forms. A face will also start the form. By the end of the first month the baby is about 1/4 of an inch long.
  • Month 2

    During the second month little fold of skin on the side of the head begin to form, they will eventually turn into the ears. The fingers, toes, and eyes are also starting to form. Bones start to replace cartilage.
  • Month 3

    By the beginning of the third month the baby’s hands, feet, toes, and fingers are fully formed. The baby’s reproductive organs are developing but you can not quite make out the gender yet. By the end of the month the baby is fully formed.
  • Month 4

    The reproductive genitalia and organs are now fully developed and the gender can easily be indicted. The baby can now yawn, stretch,make faces, and suck his/her thumb. By the end of the fourth month the baby weights around 4 ounces and is about 6 inches long.
  • Month 5

    By the beginning of the fifth month the mother may begin to feel the baby move. This is because he/she is developing muscles. Hair has begun to grown on the baby’s head. The baby should be around 10 inches long and about 1 pound in weight.
  • Month 6

    The baby is now able to open their eyes by ththe beginning of the sixth month. The baby’s skin is also now a reddish color and wrinkled. It should be around 2 pounds and a 12 inches llong.
  • Month 7

    The baby I’ll mature and develop body fat reserves. The hear of the baby is fully developed, as a result of this he/she will respond to stimuli frequently. If the baby was to be born by the end of the seven months they are likely the survive. They would be about 2-4 pounds and around 14 inches.
  • Month 8

    The baby’s brain is developing at a very rapid pace, and he/she can now see and hear. The majority of the international systems will be developed by the eighth month mark. The baby is around 18 inches and weight around 5 pounds.
  • Month 9

    The lungs should be nearly fully developed but the ninth month. The baby’s reflexes should also be coordinated. Meaning that they can turn their head, move around, blink, etc. By the time they are born they should be anywhere around 18 to 20 inches long, and around 7 pounds.
