Fetal Development

  • First Month

    the zygote is about the size of a pin head. The heart, which is a poppy seed and it has begun beating. The egg has attached itself to the lining of the uterus
  • 2 Months

    the zygote is about 1/4 inch long and has distinct, slightly webbed fingers and face, eyes, ears, and limbs have developed. the heart has divided into right and left chambers. Zygote changes into an embryo at the end of 8 weeks
  • 3 Months

    the fetus is 1 inch long and is fully formed. She/He has begun swallowing and kicking. All organs and muscles have formed and they are beginning to function
  • 4 Months

    baby is covered with a thigh layer downy hair called lanugo. His/her heartbeat cab be heard clearly. this is when the mother may feel baby first kick. About 3 inches long
  • 5 Months

    At this point the baby is about 6 1/2 7 inches long and weighs almost 4-5 ounces and a protective coating called vernix cases begins to form on the babys skin
  • 6 Months

    8-10 inches, about 8-12 ounces. Eyebrows and eyelids are now visible. the baby can hear if the mother talks or sings. The baby lungs are filled with amniotic fluid, and she/he has started breathing motions
  • 7 Months

    His/her body is well formed.The baby fingernails cover the fingertips. The baby weighs about 1 1/2 pounds and is about 14-16 inches long.
  • 8 Months

    He/she weighs between 2 1/2 and 3 pounds. He/she has most likely turned head down in preparation for birth. fun fact the baby is gaining about a half a pound per week and layers of fat are piling on
  • 9 months

    Baby is 5 to 6 pounds and measures between 17 and 18 inches. As he/she is starting to become more crowed and so the mother might feel the baby move around less
