Fetal Development

  • Period: to

    the first month.

    In the first month, the egg connects to the lining of the uterus. The baby is the size of a pin head, and the internal organs and circulatory system begins to create. This is the most critical stage for the brain and spinal cord to begin developing. The heart starts beating.
  • Period: to

    the second month

    In the second month the baby is about 1/4 inch long. The face, eyes, ears, and limbs start to form. Bones begin to grow.
  • Period: to

    the third month

    About 1 inch in length. Nostrils, mouth, lips, and eyelids form and bud for all baby teeth appear. The fingers and toes are almost completely formed and all the organs are present but are still immature.
  • Period: to

    the fourth month.

    The baby is about 3 inches and weighs almost 1 ounce. The baby can suck its thumb, swallow, hiccup, and move around. The facial features become clear and starts looking like a baby.
  • Period: to

    the fifth month

    The baby is now around 6 1/2-7 inches long and weighs around 4-5 ounces. The hair, eyelashes, eyebrows and teeth begin developing and growing. Organs are maturing and the baby becomes more active.
  • Period: to

    the sixth month

    The baby has grown to 8-10 inches and weighs around 8-12 ounces. The fat deposits under the skin, but the fetus appears wrinkled. Breathing movements begin.
  • Period: to

    the seventh month.

    The baby is about 10-12 inches and weighs almost 2 pounds. Has periods of activity followed by periods of rest.
  • Period: to

    the eighth month.

    The baby is around 14-1 inches long and 2.5-3 pounds. Rapid weight gain continues. May react to loud noises with a jerking motion. Baby finally moves into a head-down position.
  • Period: to

    the ninth month.

    The baby is now 17-18 inches long, and weighs almost 6 pounds, weight gain continues. The skin becomes smooth as the fat deposits continue. There is less room for the baby to move around and the baby acquires disease-fighting antibodies from the mothers blood. Descends into pelvis to get ready for birth.
