EDUCATION (date estimated)
Frederick studied art in Sheffield. He attended Académie royale des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp, Belgium. He worked on the docks. He then immigrated to Canada in 1912 on the advice of another Sheffield native (and future Group of Seven member), Arthur Lismer, and found work at the Grip Ltd. (the name of the Toronto, Ontario design firm that was home to many of Canada's premier designers and painters during the first half of the 20th century) design firm in Toronto, Ontario. -

In 1912, Lismer once again met up with Varley - who this time was depressed and struggling to support his family. Lismer persuaded him to come to Canada, where he found work first at Grip Ltd. and then at Rous and Mann where other Grip artists, such as Tom Thomson and Franklin Carmichael, had already gone. -
INTERESTING FACTS
(The war served since1914-1918) According to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_Varley. In beginning of January 1918, Frederick served in the First World War with C.W. Simpson, J.W. Beatty and Maurice Cullen. Varley came to the attention of Lord Beaverbrook, who arranged for him to be commissioned as an "official war artist." He accompanied Canadian troops in the Hundred Days offensive from Amiens, France to Mons, Belgium. -

The Group of Seven chose to paint Canadian wilderness that had been damaged by fire or harsh climates. Varley's major contribution to art is his work with the Group of Seven. He and Lawren Harris were the only members of the group to paint portraits. -

Frederick Varley and his childhood friend Arthur Lismer, did a lot of things, for example; go to the same arts school. In Antwerp, when Varley was older, he had a reputation of being a heavy drinker and leading a rather bohemian life. From Antwerp, he returned to London, where he almost starved trying to support himself as an illustrator. Four years later, on his return to Yorkshire, he married and fathered two children.
