The new look was very steamlined with sharp angles and broad shoulders. Women tried to deempasize their femininity and look more masculine. They also paaded the shoulders in their clothes. Skirt length was just below the knee. -
Fashions
Women wore nice dresses with lace and hats. Men wore elegant suits. Some however couldn't even afford shoes. At this point they were still dressing like it was the twentys, even though they could no longer afford it. -
Jazz Music
Jazz and Blues came to the main stream as the Depression raged on. People turned to music and the radio to get their minds off the hard times. Radios were found in millions of homes. -
Coco Chanel
French designer. her real name was Gabrielle Chanel. Her influence extended beyond her fashion. Her design was mainly jewlery, handbags, and Chanel no. 5. -
Men's Fashion
Typically sweaters vests and suits. Much less casual than today. Hats and bowties. -
The Dust Bowl
Severe drought in the Midwest lead to the loose soil being picked up by strong winds creating "black blizzards". -

Movie theaters became popular in this time period. Some of these popular films were Snow White and the Wizard of Oz. -
Monogramming
Monogramming became popular in the 30s, stores would often do it for free. -
Textiles
Wool, silk, cotton, and rayon were the most poular. Coats and capes made from fur. Most popular, purisan lamb and silver fox. Synthetic fabrics became widely used. Zipper was developed. (Slide fasener) -

Skin was pale, rouge (blush), lipstick to brighten up their faces. Used artifical eyelashes even though it took hours to apply in a salon. The curling iron became an essential part of their routine. They often imitated Joan Crawford. -

Became more feminine and women even bore midriff in the summer.
