    People went for spa treatments like mineral baths, massages and facials. They also went for things like the gardens that were there, live music and entertainment. However, the main reason people would go to spa towns is for the natural mineral springs which is believed to have therapeutic Properties for relaxation and healing.​ They started with the Romans in 43AD.

In the UK Thomas Cook began promoting foreign holidays in the early 1950s with charter flights marking the first mass holiday packages to the likes of Corsica,Palma,Sardinia and of course the Costa Brava.

In the 1950s a 50 hour work week was normal now it is an average of 37 hours a week. it is a legal requirement for employers to give their staff paid holidays, this had led for people to have longer holidays then the traditional summer time. However, more people are living longer due to this change in leisure times and people are even retiring in their 50s. however, this is likely to slow down in the future.

    in 1997 low-cost carriers took of with the deregulation of europe's domestic travel markets. prior to this move, national goverments were empowered to reserve access to national airspace for their favoured airlines (british airways and air france). after this airlines could pretty much fly to wherever they wanted, Low cost carriers like easy jet and ryanair and easyjet expanded quickly. The low cost airlines have led to more travel from regional airports.
