First Morrill Act

University of Arkansas

1871

Arkansas Industrial University under the Morrill Act of 1862, became the state land-grant institution and first state assisted college in AR.

Ellen Richards Graduates

Ellen Richards gets her second bachelors degree. A BS from MIT

Was named Branch Normal College before becoming a land-grant university under the second Morrill Act of 1890.

Chemistry of Cooking & Cleaning

Ellen Richards publishes Chemistry of Cooking and Cleaning- A manual for Housekeepers.

Second Morrill Act

Second Morrill Act passed which provided for annual appropriations to each state to support its land grant college. Also forbid racial discrimination in admission policies for colleges receiving the federal funding.

Rumford Kitchen

Solved the problem of cooking cheap, nourishing food for the poor. Called the "Science of Nutrition"

School Lunch Program

First program was founded in Philadelphia where students paid one cent for lunch.

Lake Placid Conference

First meeting of contemporaries in the field of Home Economics was held at the Lake Placid Club to discuss Home Economics education.

IFHE

International Federations of Home Economics is formed. Worldwide organization concerned with Home Economics and Consumer Studies.Serves as a platform for international exchange within the field of Home Economics.

Smith-Lever Act

1914

Established a national Cooperative Extension service that extended outreach programs through land-grant universities to educate rural Americans about advances in agricultural practices and technology.

Smith-Hughes Act

1917

Provided federal aid to the states for promoting precollegiate vocational education in agricultural and industrial trades in home economics

Future Homemakers of America

1945

Future Homemakers of America is formed to teach teenage girls how to take care of the house for their future husbands.

AAFCS

Only association representing multiple members from both FCS practice settings and content areas. Represents: nutrition, parenting & childcare, personal finance, interior design, etc.
