FACS History

  • Catherine Beecher

    Catherine Beecher
    Developed a school for girls that offered a variety of subjects including physical education to improve their health. The school was known as the Hartford Female Seminary. She also let her opinions be known in the books she wrote.
  • Morrill Act

    With this act passed it established grants for states to build colleges for its citizens.
  • Land Grant University

    This means a certain institution has been designated by its state legislature to receive benefits of the Morrill Acts
  • Arkansas Land Grant Universities

    Arkansas currently has two land grant universities. That being the University of Arkansas and the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff
  • Ellen H. Richards

    Ellen H. Richards
    One of the founders of the formerly known as American Home Economics Association. Credited for the first water quality standards in the nation that were put in place.
  • C. F. Langworthy

    Was appointed W. O. Atwater's assistant for nutrition investigations. He was also the co editor to the Journal of Home economics and also wrote nutrition bulletins.
  • W.O. Atwater

    W.O. Atwater
    Considered to be the Father of nutrition. Known for his studies of human nutrition and metabolism. Devised a system for determining caloric values that is still used throughout the world.
  • Lake Placid Conference

    Lake Placid Conference
    Was the beginning step for FACS being recognized and begin being seen as a new field of study.
  • Martha Resselaer

    Martha Resselaer
    She was known for helping get and extension program for farmers wives'. This program eventually became known as the New York State College of Home economics at Cornell University.( Edward)
  • Smith Lever Act of 1914

    Is a national corporate extension service that gave the extension of outreach programs to land grant universities. Used to educate about advances in agricultural practices and technology.
  • Smith Hughes Act of 1917

    Was adopted to provide federal aid to states to promote precollegiate vocational education in agriculture and industrial trades and home economics.
  • Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics

    Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics
    Founded in 1917 by 58 people. They all saw that people should learn about nutrition. Founded to improve the nations health and help conserve food during World War 1. Is the world's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals.
  • Clara Belle Williams

    Clara Belle Williams
    First African American graduate from New Mexico State. Became a teacher of black students by day and at night she taught parents in the areas of home economics. Where she taught at Booker T Washington School for 27 years.(Branch, 2019)
  • George Deen Act

    George Deen Act
    This act provide the first federal aid for vocational training of different types of workers and sales personnel or distribution.
  • Vocational Act of 1963

    Created support for work study programs and research. Added extra help for further studies
  • Vocational Education Amendments of 1968

    It set-aside funding for students from specific populations. It also was the first legislation to reference post secondary students.
  • Vocational Education Amendments of 1973

    This one referenced people that had disabilities. Giving them the equal opportunity as everybody else.
  • Vocational Education Amendments of 1976

    This added on from 1968 was for the equal chances for women and girls
  • Carl Perkins Act

    This was a grant that was provided to improve the education programs. It is for secondary and postsecondary given to the states.
  • Broader Field of Study

    Broader Field of Study
    Due to the profession covering more areas and involving more areas of study, the name was voted to a name change in June 1944. That new name being being what it is known as today, Family and Consumer Sciences.
