The Depart

Aug 10, 1519

There are 5 ships that have just departed from Spain. There is the Trinidad, which Magellan is commading, the San Antonio, the Concepcion, the Victoria, which I am upon and the Santiago. There are 270 of us crewmen all aboard the 5 ships.

The 1st resuppliment

Dec 13, 1519

Today we have just landed near Rio de Janerio. We were recently resupplied. There are some bad conditions currently delaying us of our next departure, but we should be able to continue sailing soon.

Brazil

Dec 15, 1519

We have just landed on the coast of Brazil. The natives greeted us with open arms. We traded with them, us recieving fresh fruit and meat, and in return us trading trinkets. Magellan is very pleased believing that the natives have converted to Christanity.

The mutiny

Apr 1, 1520

There has just been a mutiny broken out between the captain's of the Victoria, the Conception and the San Antonio. Magellan sent a party to kill Luis de Mendoza, the anchor cable was cut on the Concepcion and Juan de Cartagena, head of the mutineers on the San Antonio, surrendered. But Magellan has just abandoned Juan de Cartagena and Gaspar Quesada on an island.

Duarte Barbosa

Since the Victorian captain was recently marooned, Magellan had to find a new captain. Magellan chose Duarte Barbosa. Magellan chose Barbosa because he sided with Magellan during the mutiny.

The 'unknown sea'

Today we have started sailing into the 'unknown sea'. Magellan has named this sea the Pacific since it is very peaceful. But the journey is very rough and there is no sign of fresh food or water anywhere.

Port San Julian

Dec 8, 1520

We have just landed on Port San Julian. Here we were informed to drop anchor. Magellan says we will be staying her for the winter. After the winter I believe we will continue looking for the strait.

The Phillipines

We have just landed in an area which Magellan thought was the Spice Islands but turned out to be the Philippines. The people are very friendly here and they have just given us fresh food. I figure we will be staying here for a few days.

Magellan's death

Apr 26, 1521

Magellan and 60 other armed men waded ashore to the island of Mactan. They arrived at the shore and were soon attacked. 1500 men started shooting arrows and Magellan was hit by one and soon died.

The return

Sep 6, 1522

We have finally returned to Spain. After 3 years, and 26 days at sea, we have finally returned home. There are only 18 of us now out of the 270 crew members that were aboard the ship during the departure. It is good to know that I am finally home...
