Jean-Marc Gaspard Itard
Jean-Marc Gaspard Itard taught a feral child using techniques for teaching deaf children. He subsequently went on to write the first textbook how to teach children with exceptionalities. Wood, Judy. Teaching Students in Inclusive Settings. 5th Edition. Columbus: Pearson, 2006. Print. -
Edouard Sequin
Edouard Sequin used Itard's teaching methodologies and went on to develop his own that focused on sensory and motor development. He then founded a school in Paris in 1847. He was also a powerful influence on Maria Montessori and Samuel Howe and Thomas Gallaudet. The latter two founded schools in the United States for the blind and deaf.

Brown vs Board of Education of Topeka
Brown vs Board of Education of Topeka ended state sponsored segregation. While this seemed to point towards a racially motivated court decision, it had powerful effects on students with exceptionalities. Most legislation that followed (a bit later) for students with exceptionalities used this as a precedent. Segregation of schools because of race was now illegal, but now students who were once deemed "undesirable" were now included in mainstream classes.

The President's Committee on Mental Retardation
Since JFK had a sister who had exceptionalities, he helped to create the President's Committee on Mental Retardation. This committee helped to create federal initiatives which encouraged schools to accept students with exceptionalities. Wood, Judy. Teaching Students in Inclusive Settings. 5th Edition. Christmas in Purgatory
Christmas in Purgatory was written by Burton Blatt and Fred Kaplan. This was a picture book which showed the horrific treatment of children with exceptionalities in institutions right in the United States. This is very important because the court cases may have changed the laws, but this book helped to change citizens' minds on how we treat people with exceptionalities.

Mills vs Board of Education of the District of Columbia
The Mills case was seven children with exceptionalities who brought a class action lawsuit against schools who would not admit them. They won and much of EAHCA was derived from this lawsuit. Wood, Judy. Teaching Students in Inclusive Settings. 5th Edition. Columbus: Pearson, 2006. Print. -
Willowbrook State School
Geraldo Rivera produced a live television broadcast of the horrific conditions inside the Willowbrook State School in New York. Just like "Christmas in Purgatory," this helped to shape America's conscience towards people with exceptionalities. It is similar to the video footage of dogs and water hoses being turned on African Americans in the South. This caused an outrage and helped to shed light on the inhumane treatment of people with exceptionalities.
