    First Public School-Boston Latin School
    The Boston Latin School was established on April 23, 1635. That is nearly 140 years before our nation was called the United States of America in 1776. This particular school still operates and is fully functioning today. Boston Latin School was specifically for college preparation. (Crooks, 2022)
  • Every town over 50 families have an elementary school

    The General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony issues that each town of 50 families is to have an elementary school and in towns with 100 families or more to have a Latin School. This was declared to promote the education of the bible and Calvinist religion to the Puritan children.

    Boston Town Meeting holds a poll for free public primary schools. This idea was to be funded by the wealthier business men of the community, in which it was then opposed because they did not want to pay. (2006)

    Native American Children taken from homes to "save the man"
    In 1864 it is made illegal for Native Americans to be taught in their own language by Congress. Native American children, some as young as four years old, were stripped from their families and sent to Bureau of Indian Affairs. It is there where they are to be cleansed of their culture in the attempt to "Kill the Indian, and Save the Man" (2006)
  • Compulsory Education Law Passed in Massachusetts

    A law for all children to be educated is passed in Massachusetts. This was done to ensure that the children of the poor or uncivilized were educated to contribute to the greater good of society.
