First 2 Stroke Marine Engine
In 1889, Joseph Day invented the first 2 stroke marine engine. He created this, because couldn’t make a four stroke engine due to copyright laws. Because of this, he created a whole new type of engine. The 2 stroke engine runs on a mixture of gas and oil.

First Electric Inboard Motor
The first electric boat motor was invented in 1893. It was invented by the company, “Electo”. The specific inventer of the product is Henry R. Sutphen. The electric inboard is a cleaner, quiter, more efficient version of the gas boat engine.

First Outboard Motor
In 1907, Ole Evinrude invented the first outboard motor. An outboard motor is an alternative to an inboard, which is attacked to the transom of a boat. This motor was only one and a half horse power. Also, it weighed sixty five pounds.

The Sterndrive engine was invented in 1958. A sterndrive engine, also known as an i/o, is an engine with adjustable trim. In 1958, Jim Wynne left Kieklaefer Mercury and worked on the engine on his own. Ninety days later, Jim Wynne had invented his own sterndrive, thus inventing his sterndrive.

The first Big Block boat engine was created in 1982. A big block engine is a large V8 engine. The creater of this engine is the boat brand, “Supra”. The boat model with the new engine was the Supra Beast, as shown in the picture.

Revolutionary Outboard Produced
In 2002, Mercury marine came out with their Optimax outboard series. These outboards are extremely powerful, and before there was nothing this powerful yet efficient. These four stroke motors revolutionized the motorboat industry with the many speed records they broke. They are very common today.
