Willem Kolff
In the mid 1950’s a dutch man named Willem Kolf invented the first ever artificial heart. This artificial heart was only used in animals. This device was also air-driven and had two pumps. Dr. Jarvick used his principles on the Jarvick 7. The dog lasted 90 minutes on Kolff’s machine.

The Jarvik 7
On December 2nd a group of scientists from Massachusetts invented the first artificial heart used on a human. The daring recipient of this first artificial heart was Barney Clark. It was disk shaped and had two pumps. This was a huge leap for the medical industry. This device was called the Jarvik 7 after the Dr. Jarvick.

The Jarvik 2000
The Jarvik 2000 was a major upgrade to the Jarvik 7. Instead of having to stay in the hospital they had a belt that let the patient be mobile. The Abio Cor
The abio cor only weighed three pounds and the battery only weighed four. The significance of this innovation was that it was wireless. And it was the first self-contained artificial heart. This was only used for patients at the end of the stage for heart failure.

Temporary Artificial Heart
The syn cardia was invented at this time and was air driven. The pump could pump 9.5 liters of blood a minute. This device was non-movable, but it was only temporary. It was the size of a washing machine and weighed 418 pounds.
