410 BC Pericles Funeral oration
When the peloponnesian wars were happening, pericles a Athenian general spoke at the ceremony for the people who died at war. His speech outlined a large portion of what democracy is today. -

Athenian Democracy
Between 700 to 350 BC greeks had the first democracy. In the city of athens citizens were to take a role in their cities affairs. This however excluded women and slaves as citizen consisted of only man. -

In 1215 king john was forced to write the magna carta, this had certain rights to guard the citizens. -
John Locke Governement treaties
John locke was a philosipher who believed that the government should protect peoples life, liberty, and property. John locke described this as a contract between the country's people and the government as if the government broke that contract riots would happen. -
American Revolution
1775-1781 was when the first true democracy was created, citizens were allowed to vote and the government was restrained so that no branch could have too much power. When one branch gained too much power the others could overwhelm them. However women still couldn't vote until 1919. -
New zealand women voting rights
An electorial bill was passed where it allowed all women to vote in elections. The bill was pased by New Zealands legislative council. -
Charter of canadian rights + freedoms
Signed by queen elizibeth II this charter granted canadians civil rights as well as political rights. This charter is the first part of the Constitution act. -
Today
Today our democracy is top notch, freedom unparralel to other countries, women can vote, anyone can be elected, new laws go through the house of commons and the legislative assembly. Even now new laws are being created and hopefully our country can get better and better. -
Rome Rebublic 509BCE
In 509 BCE rome was declared a rebublic when the king left. Rich families took over and were called patricians. There was few petricians but they ruled over the plebs, the plebs however rebelled and gained more rights. The senate was then created, however only patricians could be senators but people had a say as civis.
