Marie de Medici and her family
Frans Pourbus the younger - The children in the early cenutries typically wear big, fancy gowns/outfits that seem quite dis-functional when it comes to children wearing them. The children look quite uncomfortable and wouldn't be able to run around in the yard like children do in our era. They are very proper and poised, taught to act like an adult. -
portrait der famille lomellini
Anthony van dyck - This is another painting showing the children in formal wear looking uncomfortable and hanging off the orders their mothers give them. -
Deborah Kip
Peter Paul Rubens - These three children also seem to be waiting for orders from their mother, all crowded around to help with their baby sibbling. -
Dresden Madonna
The paintings from the 1600's were typical of having perfect adult features on all of the bodies recreated. The faces of the babies look to be too grown-up and children seem to be just smaller versions of an adult. -
the five eldest children of Charles
Anthony van Dyck - This artist shows the children in their formal wear in having to care for one another and their yonger siblings, having their own responsibilities rather than having living care free and having their parents look after them. -
The Duke and Duchess of Osuna With Their Children
Francisco De Goya Y Lucientes - This painting seems to be a timeline on its own, from the youngest boy to the eldest girl. The young boys playing with their toys, the older one having a more matured toy and the two sisters in their gowns holding fans and standing closer to their parents, waiting to learn from them. -
The Family of Charles IV
Francisco De Goya Y Lucientes - This painting still shows the more formal outfits worn and the older the child the closer the seem to stand to their parents. They seem to be waiting on them because rather than finding new knowledge on their own the parents seem to teach them everything. -
The Infante Don Sebastian Gabriel De Borbon
Francisco De Goya Y Lucientes - This painting shows how fast the children are thrown into maturity, by dressing them up and teaching them about wars/battles and how they must fight for their countries even when they are so young. -
Woman With A Parasol-Madame Monet and Her Son
Clause Monet - It seems that the more society changes the farther a child is from standing with their parents and wanting to learn from them. They become more curious, the outfit changes to fit with the adventures they want to go on, and the world seems bigger and brighter. -
A Girl With A Watering Can
Auguste Renoir - The closer to our century, the brighter the backgrounds, faces, and the outfits become. There is a lot more colour and the dress becomes more loose fitting so it seems the child is able to move around more freely. -
Oarsman At Chatou
Auguste Renoir - This painting showed a lot of colour and even though the boy seems older he is still able to explore and have fun out on the water. -
Studies of the Children of Paul Bearard
Pierre-Auguste Renoir - It seems that this artist was really keen on painting children and this painting may show how the childs brain has evolved by painting it like a daydream. He shows how the mind wanders and explores. They went from being turned into adults when they were able to fend for themselves, to having a childhood and being able to discover the world. -
The Old Musician
Edouard Manet - This artist still seemed to view children as miniature adults when shown through this painting. The children seem to be put to work in the fields maybe that lay behind them. This is thought by the clothes that they wearing and the filth appearing on them. Then the older daughter is caring for the baby rather than the mother. He may paint the children this way still because he comes from a different area then other artists or maybe he just has a different opinion of them. -
Children on the Beach
Mary Cassatt - These two girls ar still pretty young so they get to sit along the beach and play in the sand rather than worry about growing up. -
Girl With A Hoop
Auguste Renoir - This artist is still keen on showing how playful and curious children are and how they shouldn't be rushed into adulthood when he shows this older girl playing with a hoop. -
Interesting Story
Laura Muntz Lyall - Getting closer to the 1900's, children are shown more and more learning things on their own and feeding their curious minds. These two girls are painted reading one another a story. -
The Young Artist
Nuffel, George van Belgian - This imaginative little girl is shown working on some artwork and expressing herself through it. -
Hide And Seek
James Tissot - Although this artist still likes using the dark shades in his drawing he adds colour to the main focus of his painting to make it stand out. He shows the playful side of children and how they use their imaginations to create games and find hiding spots to keep away from each other. -
Breton Girls Dancing, Pont Aven
Paul Gauguin - Finally in the 1900's we start seeing the children of today, how they run, dance, explore in fields, backyards and through the streets without the need to follow their parents and to grow up so fast. They can do it at their own pace without a care in the world.
