    The Marshall Plan
    Program in which the United States gave money to European countries economically broken by WWII. This service was offered to the soviets and their allies, but they refused. In the end 13 billion U.S. dollars were given to Eurpose to help rebuild after the war.
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    WIth the creation of the Berlin Wall, the people of Berlin were blocked off from trade routes, and were running out of supplies. The U.S. and other allied countries flew huge shipments of food and supplies and dropped them in Berlin.
  • Creation of NATO

    Creation of NATO
    The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is a military alliance between the United States, countries of Western Europe, and other allied countries. Rivaled the Warsaw Pact
  • China Becomes Communist

    China Becomes Communist
    The southern Chinese forces led by Chairman Mao orverthrow the Nationalist forces of northern China. Largely supported by The Soviets, China becomes a communist state.
  • The Korean War

    The Korean War
    Supported by communist China, North Korea invaded South Korea with the intent of establishing a comminist government. After hearing of the attack, the United States and other U.N. countries sent military aid to South Korea. South Korea and the U.N. were pushed pushed back far, until they finally broke through the North Korean line, and pushed well past the 38th parallel. Terretory was evened out and a DMZ (demilitarized zone) was established at the 38th parallel.

    Creation of the Warsaw Pact
    The Warsaw Pact was a military alliance between the Soviet Union and East European countries. Meants to strengthen communism in East Europe, the Warsaw pact rivaled NATO.
  • Vietnam War

    Vietnam War
    The North Vietnamese forces, aided by the Viet Cong and supported by China and the Soviet Union, attemped to take over Southern Vietnam, aided by the U.N. and other anti-comminist countries. Fought largely in the jungles, guerrilla warfare played a huge role. The U.S. suffered huge casualties, and eventually pulled out of the war.

    In the midst of the space race, the Soviet Union comes out ahead of the curve, and launches the worlds first successful satelite. This was a huge milestone for mankind and space exploration.
  • Bay of Pigs Invasion

    Bay of Pigs Invasion
    A group of CIA trained Cuban exiles were sent to Cuba in hopes to overthrow Castro and start a democracy in Cuba. This attack was easily thwarted by the Cuban army, and the invasion force surrendered.

    East Berlin, under soviet control, contructs a wall that completely seperates east and west berlin. Citezens can only cross the border for work or with special permits. Those who attemped to flee illeagally were either arrested or shot.

    With the whole world watching, Neil Armstrong steps out of the capsule and becomes the first human to step on the moon. This is a huge step for the U.S. and the world. It is also a large morale boost for the U.S. since we had been losing the space race.
