Chinese Revolution
WHEN: The Chinese Revolution started on the first of October in 1946, and lasted until 1950. WHO and WHATong declared creation of People's Republic of China (PRC.) The announcement led to a full out civil war between the Chinese Communist Party and the Nationalist Party. HOW: This was an advatage point for the Chinese during the cold war. After the colapse of the Soviet Union, many people moved twoard Hong Kong relying on western intelleigance. -
Korean War
WHEN: The Korean War starting on June 25th of 1950. WHO: The war first started between the North and South Koreans. It wasn;t till later when America stepped in to provide support for South Korea. It was feared that WWIII would begin if Russia or China stepped in. WHAT: North Korea was based on a Communist government, while South Korea was under democracy. When the war began, America was afraid of Communism spreading, so they as well took action to help South Korea. -
Koren War (Cont..)
WHAT (Cont..): Since two sides were against Communism, America feared that bigger nations such as Russia of China would step in and create WWIII. HOW: The Korean war was the first military action of the Cold War. In the end, over 5 million soldiers and civilians had lost their lives. -
Hungarian Revolution (Cont..)
HOW: The United States angered many Hungarians because they didn't give physical or economic support, but only made public speaches and sympathy. -
Hungarian Revolution
WHEN: The Hungarian Revolution took place November 4th of 1956. WHO: The Hungarian Revolution was between Hungary and the USSR. WHAT: Hungary had a very unstable government and protests were becoming a huge issues. The USSR came in and killed many people with tanks and arms. Nearly a quarter millian fled out of Hungary. It started in October when protesters demanded a more democratic government. They announced they would be leaving the Warsaw Pact. -
Sputnik Launched
WHEN: The launching of Sputnik took place in 1957. WHO: The Soviets who launched Sputnik. WHAT: The Soviets where first to acheive such a great accomplishment that the US hoped to each first. HOW: After the launch, America was worried they may be using Sputnik to spy on the US and see what advancement they might have in other areas, and find their weaknesses. With this information, the Soviets could easily jump ahead. -
U2 Spy Plan Shot Down
WHEN: The U3 Spy Plane was shot down in 1960. WHO: After the plane was shot down, an imporant meeting between President Dwight. D. Eisenhower and Soviet leader Nikta Khrusvech was arranged. WHAT: A spy place was sent over to take high resolution pictures of what was happening in Russia. HOW: Not only did Nikta create a huge event with shooting the plane down, but finding the pilot alive and keeping them. US had to admit it was a spy plane publically by the point. -
Berlin Wall Goes Up
WHEN: The Berlin Wall was put up on August 31st of 1961. WHO: This happened between the Communist Government of East Germany. WHAT: The wall was built to keep civilians from escaping the communist government and fleeing to West Germany. The wall stood till November, 9, 1989. HOW: To us, the wall stands as one of the most powerful and enduring symbols of the Cold War today. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
WHEN: The Cuban Missile Crisis took place in October of 1962. WHO: The small "war" was between Russia, America, and Cuba. WHAT: Cuba was worried and in danger of the US invading them, so in their defense Russia planted missiles in Cuba that could ewasily gain access to the US. Once a single missile launched it would start the worlds first nuclear war. HOW: They had to prevent from this happening, so the US promised they woundn't invade, if Russia took the missiles out. Peace was created temp. -
