After WWII, the economy took a turn for the worst in Europe. The Marshall Plan was enforced by the US to bring financial aid and other initiatives like supplies. Originally made by Secretary of State George Marshall.

Since Berlin was baracaded up by the Soviets for 11 months, many planes flew over dropping supplies and things needed for the civilians to survive.

NATO is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. NATO is a group of countries band together to work on keeping peace.

The first nuclear explosion, named Joe-1 after Joseph Stalin, took place on the testing range on Kazakhastan steppe. The US believed that this was the first step for the Soviets in building a detonated nuclear bomb. It came a lot earlier becasue of Klaus Fuchs, he fed the Soviets information about the Manhattan Project years before.

A war between North Korea and South Korea. (obviously). Due to Japanese and Soviets splitting them up during WWII. Japanese control over South, and Soviet military forces took control over the North. And the South establishing a nominally democratic government, and the North with a communist government.

Ethel and Julius Rosenberg were convicted of giving the Soviets the "Blueprints" for the atomic bomb. When in fact Klaus Fuchs gave them to the Soviets. They were executed June 19, 1953. They were sentenced the death penalty because they were thought to be spies for the Soviets.

The Warsaw Pact, or Organization of Frienship, was given to the communist states during the Cold War. It was an organization formed in Warsaw, Poland for collective defense under a joint military.

The US led assist to South Vietnam in repelling communist forces from Vietnam. As the war continued it spread into Laos and Cambodia, neighboring countries.

A failure on the US side. Trying to invade Cuba and overthrow Cuban dictator, Fidel Castro. Huge fail. It's considered the worst fiasco in Kennedy's presidency.

The Berlin Wall was built by the Germans in order to divide Berlin from East (communist) to West.

The closest approach to a nuclear war. Once JFK discovered Soviet Nuclear Weapons on Cuba, JFK demanded removal and announced a naval blockade of the island. A week later, Soviet leader surrendered to the US demands.

A space race! WE wanted to be the first people to get man on the moon. We beat the Soviets. Just as JFK promised, we had a man on the moon by the end of the decade.

November 9, 1989 East German government official, Gunter Schabowski made an announcement basically stating they are permanantly opening the entrances between East and West Berlin. There was a huge celebration, eventually the wall was taken down, piece by piece, chip by chip.

It's collapse was hailed by the west as a freedom victory; democracy over totalitarianism and capitalism over socialism. the Soviet Union broke down into 15 different countries.
