The Marshall Plan
The plan for the U.S. to help and support Europe fix their economy after WWII. It lasted for about four years. The main goal for the U.S. was to rebuild any destroyed buildings and make Europe look good as new even after a devistating war. -

NATO stands for North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Their original goal was "to keep the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans down.", said their first leader Lord Ismay. -

Creation of the Warsaw Pact
The Warsaw Pact was a mutual defense treaty between eight communist states of Central and Eastern Europe which was in use during the Cold War. -
Vietnam War
The Vietnam War was a fight between North Vietnam and South Vietnam. North Vietnam was supported by its communist allies, and the U.S. (along with other anti-communist countries) supported South Vietnam. North Vietnam won this war. -
Soviet launch Sputnik
Sputnik 1 was the first artificial Earth Satellite. It was still visible from Earth throughout its orbits, but it was still considered to be in space. It did about 1400 orbits and it was in space for 3 months. This launch also triggered the Space Race with the U.S. -
Fidel Castro comes to power in Cuba
Castro was Prime Minister of Cuba from 1959-2008, he was President of Cuba from 1976-2008, and he was the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba from 1961-2011. -
Bay of Pigs
The U.S. and Cuban exiles invaded Cuba. This invasion was unsuccessful. -
The Berlin Wall Goes Up
This wall was to completely seperate West Berlin and East Berlin. There were guard towers along the wall making sure nobody attempted to cross. There were also anti-vehicle trenches. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Cuban missle crisis was a confrontation between the Soviet Union and Cuba, against the U.S. It was one of the most major confrontations of the Cold War. -
US sends a man to the moon
Neil Armstrong was the first man to land on the moon. Even though the Soviet Union was the first to send a satellite to space, the U.S. was the first to successfully land a human on the moon. -
Olympic Rivalry: 1972 basketball game
The score was 48-49, the Soviet Union was in the lead, and there was 3 seconds left of the game. Collins (a player on the U.S.A. side) made a buzzer shot making the final score 50-49. U.S. victory. -
German Reunification/Fall of Berlin Wall
East Germany and West Germany became one whole country again. The fall of the Berlin wall created reunification of East and West Germany because it was once put up to create seperation. -
Collapse of the Soviet Union
The Soviet Union went from being one huge piece of land and it transformed into 15 different nations. This collapse was in result of the West claiming victory and ending the Cold War.
