The Marshall Plan
The Marshall Plan was the American program that aided Europe. The United States gave support to help rebuild Europe's economy after World War II. The United States wanted to help them to try and prevent the spread of Communism. The plan began April of 1948 and was in operation for four years. The main goal of the plan was to rebuild a region that was destroyed by war, move trade barriers, and modernize industry. -
Formation of NATO
NATO is the North Atlantic Treaty. It states that a military attack against any of the signatories would be considered an attack agaisnt all of them. The U.S. tied its security to the nations in Europe. -
Korean War
The Korean War was between North and South Korea. The U.S joined into the war because they did not want the spread of communism. They felt that Communism would take over the world. North Korea first went to war with South Korea because they wanted South Korea to join in with Communism. -
Rosenberg Spy Case
The Rosenberg Spy Case was with Ethel and Julius Rosenberg. They were soviet spys that stole the nuclear bomb secreats on how to make it. This make Russia able to create the bomb way before the U.S. thought they were capable of doing. The two women were given the death penalty although there was no hard evidence of their crimes. -
Creation of the Warsaw Pact
The Warsaw Pact was a treaty that stated that if one of the countries on the treaty were attacked that all of the other countries had the obligation to support and back up the attacked country. This meant that all the countries on the treaty would help eachother out. It was named the Warsaw Pact because it was signed in Warsaw. This pact ended in 1991. -
Vietnam War
France was fighting the league of independance with Vietnam. France was trying to gain controll of Vietnam and the U.S. got involved because it hardened all policies against any allies of the Soviet Union. The U.S. also helped out Diem and South Vietnam during the war. After the war, the U.S. spent a lot of money and caused many soldiers to have bad psychological effects. -
Bay of Pigs
The Bay of Pigs was meant to be a mission to destroy Castro's airforce. The plan failed because Castro had found out about this plan. On April 17, the Cuban brigade invaded the Bay of Pigs. Not long after the attack 1,100 invaders were taken as prisoners. -
Berlin Wall Goes Up
The Berlin Wall in Germany was put up to keep western German's from entering the rest of Germany. Eastern Germany was Socialist and Western Germany was Fascist. Western Germany was also occupied by the Allies. -
Cuban Missile Crisis
The Soviets had nuclear missles in Cuba. The missels were aimed at the Americans as payback for the U.S. having them aimed at them. This caused Cubans and Americans to be hostile since the Bay of Pigs invasion. The was considered as leveling the playing field. -
The Six Day War
Isreal focused on Egypt's Gaza Strip and Sinai Penninsula. -
US Sends Man to the Moon
Neil Armstrong was the first man to ever walk on the moon. This was known as a great improvement and he placed his landmark of the U.S. This was a huge advancement in the technology race. -
Nixon Visits China
President Nixon visiting China was a huge deal to show the normalizing between the U.S. and Republic of China. It was the first time in 25 years since the separation that a U.S. president had visited the nation. -
Olympic Hockey Game
This was a big day because the American hockey team had played against the Soviet dream team. The American team had won and marked a big day because it shows the U.S. winning. -
German Reunification/Fall of the Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall was taken down and a huge party because then Germans could go freely in the city. After the wall was taken down, Berlin was reunited. Reunification was official October 3, 1990. -
Collaspse of the Soviet Union
The Soviet Union's republics had all declared their own republic. Only one was left and this happened because the large number of radical reforms by the president.
