South Dakota becomes a state. Pierre is named temporary capital but years down the road, stayed as the capital. -
Massacre Wounded Knee

This massacre was one of the last battles between the American settlers and the Native American. It is estimated that 150 Native Americans lost their lives. Half which were women and children. Some people believe that this number could be double that.
