  • The Great Northern War

    The Great Northern War
    Russia, Denmar-Norway, and Saxony Poland challenged Sweden to war. At this time Peter I was the czar of Russia. The war lasted for 21 years. The ani-sweden force won the war. When the final treaty(The Treaty of Nystad) came out, Russia got many pieces of land from Sweden.
  • Decembrist Revolt

    Decembrist Revolt
    Many Nobles encouraged troops in St. Petersburg to not take an oath to Czar Nicholas I. Then they staged an uprising trying to promote Constantine (Nicholas's brother) to accend to the throne. The uprising became known as the Decembrist Revolt. It however was crushed. Nicholas tried 289 Decembrists, executing five, emprisoning 31, and sending the rest to Siberia.

    Alexander II Emancipates The Serfs
    Alexander II became the czar as the Crimean War was finishing up. Russia was fighting the British, French, and Turks in this war. The war showed Alexander the wrong in Russia's government. So he decided to make many reforms. His biggest reform was to emancipate the serfs. The serfs no longer were forced to do labor. They still however had very little rights.

    Czar Alexander II had had much military failure. Because of this there were many assassination attempts on his life. A terrorist organization called the People's Will tried to kill him several times. They tried to shoot him, derail his train, and blow up St. Petersburg palace itself. Finally they completed the job with a bomb.

    Both Russia and Japan wanted dominance over Manchuria and Korea. China gave Japan an important and strategic port in Manchuria. Russia extended the trans-siberian railroad to Vladivostok seaport. The railroad ran through Manchuria. Russia had little troops to support its land. Japan had a very large amount of troops so they told Russia to leave. Russia agreed, but when they went back on the agreement Japan attacked. Japan won the war and in 1905 the treaty and Russia lost its new land.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Bloody Sunday
    Many industrial workers in Russia marched on St. Petersburg to go on strike and negotiate with czar Nicholas II. They wanted two things. One was the freedom of speech, and the other was the right to vote. Nicholas was out of town and his Uncle did not want the protests. He ordered his police to open fire on the people. More than one hundred marchers died, and several hundreds were injured.
  • Revolution of 1905

    Revolution of 1905
    Russians were very angered by Bloody Sunday. They began a great series of demonstrations, and riots. Czar Nicholas II tried several times to appease them. The protesters demands were too high however. Soon there were assassination attempts and mutinies all over Russia.
  • World War I

    After the World War began, Russia mobilized troops on the German border. Russia wanted to gain land from the Ottoman Empire, which was allied with Germany. Germany told Russia to leave, and France to stay out of it. France and Russia then teamed up against Germany. Russia, however did not participate in the end of the war due to a Revolution within its own country.

    Total war was going on in World War I. Nicholas II was gone and there was a power vacuum in Russia. The peasants rose up in March and demanded the abdication of Nicholas. There were many riots. The revolt was final, and it was the end of czars in Russia.

    Food shortages occured during World War I. When the Czar Nicholas II refused to do anything about it, the people rioted. After a while the riots got fiercer. Soon the Czar's old soldiers joined the riots. They demanded that the czar step down. Nicholas had no choice.
