Events leading up to the Russian Revolution

  • The Great Northern War

    The Great Northern War
    The war was fought over a miltiary conflict between Russia, Denmark-Norway and Saxony-Poland tring to challenge the supremacy of Sweden of the Baltic location. Sweden was ruled by a young leader named Charles XII. With Sweden's leader being so unexperience the war ended up with Russia winning. Russia was now in power of the Baltic region and a major force in European politics.
  • The Decembrist Revolt

    The Decembrist Revolt
    Krondraty Fyodorovich Ryleyev was one of the main leaders in the revolt. The revolt was mainly made up of nobles and army officers. The objective of this revolt was to try to overthrow the czar's government and set up a consitituional monarchy. Czar Nicholas exiled hundreds to Siberia and killed five leaders. After that Nicholas created very strict laws on his people. He had a secret police spy on students, teachers and government officials.
  • Alexander II Emancipates the Serfs

    Alexander II Emancipates the Serfs
    In 1861 Alexander II and other officials realized that Russia was falling behind in the industrial fields. There were so many serfs in Russia's population. Factory employers couldnt find enough workers to make enough products to compete with other countries. So in order to start competing with other countries Alexander II freed the serfs.
  • The Assassination of Alexander II

    The Assassination of Alexander II
    Alexander II of Russia was assassinated in 1881 by a bomb thrown in the streets on St.Petersburg. The bomb was thrown by a revoluntionary group called "Peoples Will". This group is responsable for killing many officials and making several attempts to kill the Czar but failed too until they got him on the streets of St.Petersburg. After his assassination he was succeeded by his son Alexander III.
  • The Russo-Japanese War

    The Russo-Japanese War
    This war was fought on the far eat side of Russia. The war was a complete disater for Russia. There military took huge hits from this war. Russia's only naval base that was available all year around was captured in January of 1905. This war took effect on both Russia and Japan in great measures.
  • Bloody Sunday

    Bloody Sunday
    A group of workers that were on strike fiercly moved towards the Czar's palace because they didnt like the Czar's rule. The guards of the Czar's palace fired shots in the crowds of people to try to scatter them but ended up killing around 1000 people killed in the scuffle. the Czar was not home at the time and didnt give the okay to fire so the Czar was blamed for the deaths that took place.
  • Revolution of 1905

    Revolution of 1905
    The Revolution of 1905 was started off a calm protest. Father Gapon took 150,000 people into the streets of St.Petersburg to protest about their way of life. Nicholas thought they were tring to overthrow the government but they were really just asking him for help. This turned into what is known as Bloody Sunday and after rumors spread it turned very ugly. This was the beginning of the Revolution of 1905.

    World War 1 Russian Involvement
    The war started on July 28,1914 but Russia didnt get involved until 1917. Russia rallied around Nicholas II after taken several weakening hits in multiple cities. Russia had been taken over by Kerensky and the Provisional Government. Then by 1917 Lenin had taken power over multiple Russian cities and ruled them with communism. Over the first four years of the war major changes to Russia had happened with the fall of autocracy and the rise of communism.
  • The March Revolution

    The March Revolution
    The March Revolution was caused by World War 1. The first World War costed Russia millions of lives, it created a society that could barely keep going with necessary needs. Many workers demanded 50% increase in wages so they could buy food for thier families. Well the employers then locked out the workers so they had no work and no money. This created many riots that got out of control. Nicholas was under pressure to calm them. This was known as the March Revolution that took place in 1917.

     Czar Nicholas II abdicates the Russian Throne
    Nicholas was a weak ruler and not a very convincing one either. Nicholas didnt want to rule Russia. He was not very smart he led Russia into multiple costly wars. Russia started diminishing with food supply, soliders became scared of war.
