Events Leading Up to the Russian Revolution

    The Great Northern War
    The Great Northern War was a war between Russia and Sweden over land bordering the Baltic Sea. Russia allied themselves with Saxony (Poland; Poland was part of the Saxon union at the time) and Denmark. The war ended with Sweden's defeat and when their wounded king was forced to flee to Turkey.

  • The Decembrist Revolt

    The Decembrist Revolt
    The Decembrist Revolt was composed of a small group of army soldiers and nobles whose goal was to try and overthrow the government. The people who were rebelling wanted constitutional monarchy. The revolt was crushed by Czar Nicholas, 5 people were executed, and many were sent to Siberia.

    Czar Alxander II Emancipates Serfs
    Alexander II was son of Czar Nicholas I, he earned himself the name "The Liberator," by making a four hundred page long document in order to abolish serfdom in Russia.

    Assasination of Alexander II
    On the streets of St. Petersburg, Alexander II was assassinated by an unknown rebel who threw a bomb at him.
  • Russo-Japanese War

    Russo-Japanese War
    This was not a popular war, and the public didn't really want it to happen, but Czar Nicholas needed something to distract his people from the problems of their country, so off to war Russia went. The armies were unprepared, and a major naval base in Russa was captured.

    Bloody Sunday
    Bloody Sunday began as a peaceful protest by people who weren't happy with working conditions, poor ecomony, and the war with Japan. They had come to talk to the Czar, but unbeknownst to them, he wasn't in the city. Instead, his great uncle tried to stop the demonstration, and when he couldn't, ordered soldiers to fire upon the crowd.
  • Revolution of 1905

    Starting with Bloody Sunday, the revolution of 1905 was basically the Russian people protesting and rebelling against not only the decisions Czar Nicholas made, but against Czarist rule in general.
  • World War I

    World War I
    When going into World War I, Russia had the biggest army in the world, and defeated Germany a few times. however, then the Germans marched on the Russians and destroyed the Russian Second Army. The Russian armies ended up being extremely short on supplies, and in the end were defeated. The losses numbered between 900,000 and 2,500,000 people.
  • The March Revolution

    The March Revolution
    Workers went on strike after being refused raises in order to pay for food. Steadily the number of people in this demonstration grew until riots and protests were occurring all over Petrogrand (St. Petersburg) The Duma turned to Nicholas, who being foolish, decided it was nothing to worry about. The Duma then took matters into their own hands, directly disobeyed the czar, and tried to make things right for the people. When Nicholas returned, the Duma was in control and the throne was lost.
  • Czar Nicholas Abdicates Throne

    Czar Nicholas Abdicates Throne
    On this day, Czar NIcholas, the last czar of Russia abdicated from the throne. Due to protesting groups of people including his own army, Czar NIcholas was forced to give up power. Once he had abdicated a provincial government was formed.
