John Locke
Believed that representative government was the only reasonable kind of government. Locke's political ideas were put into the United States Declaration of Independacne and the United States Constitution. -
English Bill of Rights
LImited the power of the English sovereign. Was written as an act of Parliament. -
Jean-Jacques Rousseau
Believed freedom was the most important thing. Social contract and the importance of individual freedoms was his idea. -
Baron de Montesquieu
Believed Seperation of Powers was the most important thing. Influenced the authors of the Constitution in establishing laws and division of duties. -
Treaty of Paris
Ended the American Revolutionary War. In the treaty, Great Britian recognized the the former American colonies as independent/sovereign states. -
Voltaire
Believed Religion and freedom were the most imprtant things. HIs belief in Religion and freedom from government infuenced the 1st Amendment to the Constitution. -
Cesare Beccaria
Helped form a society dedicated to economic, political, and administrative reform. He published an essay about crimes and punishments. -
First Continental Congress
The First Continental Congress comprised of delegates from the colonies. Also served as the government of the 13 American colonies. -
Second Continental Congress
The Second Continental Congress came together after the American Revolutionary War had already begun. Five years later, the Congress ratified the first national constitution also known as the Articles of Confederation. -
Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence is what lead to our independence from King George III. Justified our right to rebel against a government that didn't guarantee us our natural rights. -
Articles of Confederation
The Articles of Confederation was the first constitution of the United States. It made the union of the thirteen colonies legal. -
Shay's Rebellion
Shay's Rebellion is the name given to a series of protests from farmers. It was the uprising of popular support that wanted to increase taxes higher than they already were. -
Philadelphia Convention (Constitutional Convention)
The purpose of the Philadelphia Convention was to fix any of the porblems they were facing. The result of the Convention was the United States Constitution. -

(509-49 BC). Ancient Rome was the largest city. From Rome, military decisions were taken, and the wealth they earned was invested for buildings.
