    Missouri Compromise
    The Missouri Compromise was a compromise that put a line above Missouri. Everything above the line was a free state and vise-vera. Henry Clay proposed it and it passed. It impacted the West and it happened because Missouri wanted to be a slave state. It happened also due to tensions in Missouri.
  • Wilmont Proviso

    Wilmont Proviso
    This proviso was a massive event that ultimately partly triggered the Civil War. It was an unsuccessful proposal that would have made all slavery in new land from Mexico illegal. It happened because the USA needed to figure out what to do with new land from Mexico. And the effect was a worsening relationship between the North and South.

    Comprise of 1850
    California was free and the new states were decided free or not by the individual state. And the fugitive slave act was implemented. It involved the new land in the west. It was proposed to sort out the new land into slave and free territory. Many northerners and even Southerners were shocked by this decision.

    Any found escaped slaves must be returned to the south and if you do not report one you would be fined and if you do it twice you could go to jail. It was a badly organized act and many free Africans were sold into slavery. The North was shocked and enraged by this act. It was one of the major dividers of the North and South

    Uncle Tom's Cabin
    A book about a escaped slave and the suffering they had. It was a massive success and many Americans bought the book. It changed many people from prop to anti- slavery. Even though the book was realistic fiction it still gave the North an edge on the south.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act / Bleeding Kansas

    Kansas Nebraska Act / Bleeding Kansas
    The Kansas Nebraska territory was granted popular sovereignty. Popular poverty is where each individual state can decide whether it is or is not a slave state. The southerners like the act. The Northerners were outraged but the act. A bloody battle broke out. This was a major step leading up to the Civil War.

    Dred Scott Case
    This Dred Scott case was a court case that enraged the North. A free African American man went to court to confirm his rights. To everyone surprise, the court declared that whether you were born in a free state or not you did not have the right applied by the constitution. This shocked both the north and south.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debate

    Lincoln Douglas Debate
    The Lincoln Douglas debates were a series of debates fired up the election of 1858. The debates took place in Illinois and were massively popular and many people showed up to them. Although in the end Douglas now the election overall it helped Lincolns name become know for his presidential race.
  • John Brown’s Raid

    John Brown’s Raid
    John Brown's raid was a raid against slave owners led by John Brown. The raids happened in Harper Ferry and it was massively unsuccessful because barely anyone showed up. He was raised by a father who strongly disagreed with slavery. He ended up getting hung for treason after the raid.

    The Southern secession was when the southern states seceded. The states that seceded did so soon after Lincolns election. The Southern states that seceded made James Buchanan their president. This ultimately started the civil war
  • Lincoln’s Election of 1860

    Lincoln’s Election of 1860
    Lincoln won the presidential election after what some called luck. It was a 4-way competition and Lincolns name didn't even appear on many ballots. He won 39.8% of votes between the 4. He also was a Republican candidate.
