Events Leading up to the American Revolution

  • French and Indian War

    French and Indian War
    French and Indian War This war was about the land in the Ohio River Valley. The Britidh wanted to use the land to settle and build towns and the French wanted to use it for trading purposes. The French won many of the begining battles but the British ended up winning the war. The Colonists were anxious to find out who the winner of the war was.
  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763It was a document that stated Colonists could not settle West of the Appalation mountains. The British wrote this for the Settlers safety for the Native Americans. The Colonists were mad becuase they wanted to settle past the Appalations.
  • Sugar Act

    British placed taxes on Sugar and Molasess. Brititish di so, so they could pay off their debts from the French and Indian War. Colonist were upset with the idea of taxes.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    Taxes were put on pieces of paper and stamps were to show that the tax was paid.. The British still needed money to pay for the war. This was eventually repealed but this was the start of the colonists boycott.
  • Writs of Assistance

    Custom Ofiicers would search any ships that came through the harbors at will because Britian wanted tomake sure no unpaid tax items left. Colonists, especially merchants, felt an invasion of privacy.
  • Townshend Act

    Taxes were plalced on everyday items such as glass, paper, milk and tea. The colonists began to boycott these products.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    Angry colonists confronted British soldiers about the Quatering Acts. One British soldier acceidently fired his gun and then everyone else started firing. 5 colonists were killed. The British felt bad because it bas called a massacre. Colonists were angry.
  • Quatering Act

    Colonists were required to provide housing, food, and candles,etc. to British Soldiers who needed a place to stay. British didn't want to waste money on Quatering for troops. The colonists were angry but little could be done.
  • Tea Act/Boston Tea Party

    Tea Act/Boston Tea Party
    Colonial tea merchants were cut off of the trade with Britain and India. This enflamed the Colonists which caused the Boston Tea Party. They dumped the tea from an incoming british ship into the Boston Harbor. The british were extremely mad and the colonists got their revenge.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Intolerable Acts
    Colonists were not permitted to hold town meetings and the Boston port was closed. The British were tired of the Colonists reacting and breaking laws. This caused the First Continetal Congress to meet in Philidelphia. Individual colonies began to unify.
  • 1st Continental Congress

    1st Continental Congress
    Delegates from each colony gathered in Phelidelphia and had a meeting about what they were planning to do about the British. The effect of this meeting was the idea of rebellion. It helped the colonists find ways to resist the British.
  • "Give me Liberty" Speech

    "Give me Liberty" Speech
    This speech was given by Patrick Henry in 1775 at the House of Burgesses. He was part of the Sons of Liberty and was expecting a war to breakout from these events.
  • Battle of Lexington and Concord

    Battle of Lexington and Concord
    These were the first two battles in the American Revolution. There were 70 colonial men and 700 British soldiers. 8 militian men were killed then, the Colonists retreated. The British followed them, only to find themselves surrounded by 4,000 colonial soldiers. The first shot is known as "The Shit Heard Around the World"
  • 2nd Continental Congress

    2nd Continental Congress
    The second Continental Congress met in Philidelphia in 1775. They established the Continental Army and elected George Washington as General.
  • Ft. Ticonderoga

    Ft. Ticonderoga
    This battle was the first big win for America. They captured the British fort and most of their supplies which helped them win most of the next battles.
  • Battle of Bunker Hill

    Battle of Bunker Hill
    The British attracked Colonists at Bunker Hill. They were told "Don't fire til you see the whites of their eyes" The British ended up winning even though they lost alot of men.
  • Battle of New York

    Battle of New York
    In 1776, the British set forth to capture the colonie's main economic city. They began the effort by recapturing New York. First, they drove Washington off Long Island; then, from lower Harlem. After this initiative, Washington retreated to White Plains, where for the first time, he was able to hold off the British forces. The British, then again, out smarted Washington. He was forced to retreat to New Jersey.
  • Declaration of Independence

    The first draft was written by Thomas Jefferson. It was based off of words of Famous philosopher John Locke. On July 4, 1776 it was approved by the second continental congress.
  • Common Sense

    An English Colonist wrote a phaphlet called "Common Sense" It statednhow there were other people to trade with and such and that a little island like Britian shouldn't control them. It widely increased public support for Independence.
  • Battle of Trenton

    Battle of Trenton
    It took place near Trenton, New Jersey. The battle was fought between the Americans against the Hessians and British troops after the Americans lost the battle in New York and were forced to retreat through New Jersey.
  • Battle of Princeton

    Battle of Princeton
    Washington's troops attacked The British near Princeton, New Jersey.This was the last major battle that winter. The British were defeated.
  • Battle of Saratoga

    Battle of Saratoga
    This was consitered a turning point in the war because the French and Spanish joined the colonits. They won this battle and many others because of their help. They started to out number the British troops.
  • Winter at Valley Forge

    Winter at Valley Forge
    Conditions were really bad at Valley Forge. Most of Washinton's men died of the cold, starvation, or diseases. They were low on supplies and they didn't have anywhere to go.
  • Yorktown

    This was the last battle of the revolutionary war. This was the battle that gave the colonists independence. It happened in Virginia where General Cornwalis surrendered to General Washington. From that day on they didn't have to answer to Britian.
  • Treaty of Paris

    Treaty of ParisThis Treaty ended the war. It stated that France had to give up all their land in North America including Canada. The British were happy to win and get all the land East of the Mississippi River and the Colonists were excited to move west of the Appalation Mountains and settle.
