Proclamation
The British prohibited any settlement west in the Appalachian Mountain. Colonists disregarded the law and moved down into the Appalachian Mountains anyway. -
The Sugar Act
This act cut taxes in half in order to stop smuggling. This was the British's attempt to stop colonists from sneaking in illegal, foreign made molasses. Colonists became unhappy with laws being made for them. -
The Stamp Act
The British required Colonists to purchase special stamped paper for all packages like newspapers, all legal documents, licenses,pamphlets, and almanac packaging, in order to help British troops during the Seven Years War. Colonists opposed the Stamp Act, boycotted British goods, and unified. -
Repeal of The Stamp Act
After four months of protests, British Parliament took away the Stamp Act and replaced it with the Declaratory Act. At first, Colonists were happy when the Stamp Act was removed. They became upset again when the Declaratory Act was passed. They didn't want to be controlled by the Parliament. -
The Boston "Massacre"
British soldiers opened fire on colonists and killed five "defenseless men". Samuel Adams and other colonists called this confrontation a massacre even though it wasn't because technically it was the colonists that started it in the first place. -
The Boston Tea Party
Colonists were tired of following Parliament's rules and were angry because they were charged taxes on tea, so they dressed as Indians and poured 18,000 pounds of tea into the Boston Harbor. -
The Intolerable Acts
Parliament passed the Intolerable Acts in response to the Boston Tea Party and shut down the Boston Harbor. Then, British soldiers were able to to be housed in private homes and buildings because the Quartering Act was passed. General Thomas Gage, the new governor of Massachusetts, placed Boston under marital law. Colonies made the First Continental congress and drew up the Declaration of Rights in response. -
Lexington and Concord
Gage's men sent troops to Concord to capture illegal weapons and ammunition from minutemen. The colonists fought back, and the British fled in embarrassment. -
The Olive Branch Petition
The British were sent a petition to bring back peace between the colonies and Britain. The King rejected the petition and the colonists became furious. -
The Battle of Bunker Hill
Men of the militia were attacked on Breed's Hill. Americans eventually ran out of ammo so the British defeated them. Although they lost, the colonists were satisfied because it was a moral victory.
